What if Pinocchio said his nose was going to grow?

Would it?

I was asked to answer this question a couple years ago and thought it was a stupid question until I tried to answer it..
Moment by moment the truth can change …

When he says “his nose is going to grow”
For him, that’s a truth … so his nose won’t grow …

And in the very next moment since his nose doesn’t grow, his truth changes to a lie, so his nose grows ….

I know … I know … very philosophical

🤔🤔🤥
@Lackwittyname

Thank you Kind sir …
@Jayciedubb

That could be …

But also, a lie is “what is said is not true” 🙏

@Soossie 🤔🤔🤔 this is an interesting view of the subject because you are 100% correct. A lie is not the truth. But there's also misinformation which also isnt true either. ..or would it be better to say its not necessarily true?? Idk. ..but when someone believes a lie that's been told to them and pass it on as if it's the truth, are they liars? I think a lie is intended deception. To me, that's what i hate most about lies and liars. Its the deception. ..wait a min. ...what about what I consider to be some of the worst kinds of Lies. Those are the half truths , where No Lie has been told, they just omit the truth. They're called Lies by omission

As far as Pinocchio goes, I think he's giving you a heads up then it's definitely going to grow. if he's lying just to get you to Flinch or something, then who knows what what what will happen? maybe it will implode LOL

it only grows when he knowingly lies so it would depend on if Pinocchio himself believed it when he said it.

if he believed his nose would grow when he said it it wouldn't grow because he was being honest when he said it. his nose doesn't care if he's wrong or mistaken. just being honest.

however if he thought it wouldn't grow and said that it would then his nose would grow. because he wasn't being honest at that moment. his nose doesn't care that he was actually correct just that he was being dishonest at the time.

@bugeye true.. ultimately, he's always in control of when it grows. He knows when he's lying. If he warns of its growth, whether he lies or not, it wouldn't matter, it's going to grow.
No it wouldnt. His nose doesn't predict the future. it needs an input in order to grow ie lies. The same way a typewriter needs input to write text.

@Ozymandiaz I just changed my approach to the other way. It's not like everything he says is a lie. So if he said his nose is going to grow and it doesn't, it'll grow. And if he says it's going to grow and it does grow, that's okay too because he's not one of these compulsive pathological Liars is he? No he's just got a tick that gives himself away when he does lie as we all tend to do sometimes. And finally, if all else fails, he can just blurt out a quickie to get the ball rolling. You know , something like, "hey helen, you look great!" As he's passing by the Burn Center or something LOL okay that was mean. sorry but you know what I mean, " I love you too Geppetto!" ...'geppetto-file' *he mumbles under his breath 🤣😂😅

Lol then The Secret Gets Out that Pinocchio doesn't really want to be a boy around Geppetto .. wait, is that even his name? It's something like that I'm pretty sure that's it

Well if he tacked on a lie after he said it would grow it should grow, as in, "My nose is going to grow because I just ran a mile in 5 seconds"
Jayciedubb · 56-60, M
@Lackwittyname yeah that's what I'm thinking too.. ultimately it's going to grow for a number of reasons and if it doesn't he can just tell a lie and it'll grow
ElRengo · 70-79, M
It´s an old paradox (not of course formulated about Pinocchio) that resurfaced with the worries of Logicism (B. Russell and others) about self refference.
Jayciedubb · 56-60, M
@ElRengo logicism? ...ism? Or cism? ..probably cism, no? You can tell this is way beyond my pay grade but it sounds very interesting
If he lied, his nose would grow, but then he'd be telling the truth. His nose would not grow.

If he told the truth, it wouldn't grow.

@Mamapolo2016 I wonder if it grows when he cheats too. Can you imagine him playing solitaire LOL or hey can you imagine him in Vegas just trying to play poker LOL he'd be leaving Vegas butt naked every time. On second thought, he could never develop a gambling problem because he'd never have that feeling of winning.

I agree with the philosophically astute reply from Soossie.
MartinTheFirst · 26-30, M
"No it wont grow because i'm not lying right now" said the pinoc
MartinTheFirst · 26-30, M
@Jayciedubb Ah that's true, didn't read the post correctly
MartinTheFirst · 26-30, M
@Jayciedubb But I think there's a difference in being wrong, and lying
Jayciedubb · 56-60, M
@MartinTheFirst of course there is. Theoretically, every Soldier fighting in every war that's ever been thought he was fighting for the right side. And the enemies were wrong. Right and wrong are relative terms but the truth is always the truth. There's a Confucius quote that says something like three things can can't stay down . that's the Sun and the Moon and the truth. If you think about it, a lie has to connect to the truth but the truth is connected to the truth already so what do you do with that truth. Sooner or later that geometry is not going to work out and the lies going to poke up and the truth will be revealed
