I once shopped at a small store in Lansing, Michigan, that sold extremely cheap handbags, which were designer knockoffs. They've gone out of business since, because it is not legal to sell designer knockoffs in the USA. But the bags were attractive, (one of them was gorgeous!), the prices were the same as normal retailers charge for bags, and they were marked Gucci, Prada, and Coach. I probably bought 6 bags there.
I used the bags for years, but one thing I noticed early on, was that of all my acquaintances at the time, only the most shallow of them were impressed by the labels on my bags. One man even spread the rumor that I was wealthy, and began to be interested in me...oops! I mean, interested in the fictitious money he imagined I had. 馃ぃ馃ぃ馃ぃ
It became a source of amusement for me. "Oooo!!! I LOVE your bag!", became my Shallow Hal signal...and I would have a quiet little laugh.
