Just “The King”

As I understand the custom in the UK, one only refers to the King by name after their death. During their lifetime and reign, they are referred to as simply “The King”. For example, King William IV, who reigned prior to Queen Victoria, would have been simply referred to as The King during his reign. But posthumously, he’s referred to by name.

I call him King Chuck when I’m thinking better of him. The rest of the time I have a pretty low opinion of him.
That makes sense because he’s the absolute ruler of the country. Though less so now than in past ages and using his full name king Charles Philip Arthur George would be a bit unwieldy 🤣
No, he is not the absolute ruler of the country. The United Kingdom is a Democracy, with a Constitutional Monarch as the Head of State. The United Kingdom is not a Dictatorship. @Onestarlitnight

@MissBrittany we’ll, at least not a dictatorship run by The King🤷‍♂️

@Onestarlitnight Not the absolute ruler, just the head of a family of benefit scroungers.

I don't think there's any naming conventions. Queen Elizabeth was probably known as Queen Elizabeth for the first few years of her reign, but then became so well known that she was simply known as The Queen, even to foreigners.

Charles is known as King Charles to most people at the moment, but will probably become The King later on.

makes sense
AbbeyP · 70-79, F
No you are wrong there. The Queen was known as that because she reigned so long. People do refer to ‘King Charles’ now

@AbbeyP reference to King Charles, the current monarch, is incorrect
AbbeyP · 70-79, F
Not at all. Of course the full title is King Charles III@littledidi
littledidi · F
@AbbeyP and proper protocol dictates that he be referred thusly after his death. While reigning, he is properly referred to as The King. Period.
MartinII · 70-79, M
That’s correct. It has seemed a bit odd, in recent weeks, to hear the late Queen referred to as “Queen Elizabeth”. But that is how it should be.
MasterLee · 56-60, M
Maybe he was a queen
KatyO83 · 41-45, F
Yep - because there is only ever one reigning monarch so they are simply The King or The Queen.

Does the wife of the king also call him "The King" or would she be an exception? 🤔
Pretzel · 61-69, M
that makes sense
it's not like there is more than one king or queen in the country

Interesting. Didn’t know that was a thing, a custom.
Tres13 · 51-55, M
There is only One King

Elvis has just left the building
Galanr40 · 61-69, M

Until they get rid of them!
If there's only one of something then theres no need to define any futher.

Theres a lot of dead kings, so thats when you need to be specific🤷‍♀️

Its not unique to the UK, or royalty, its really just abbreviated speech.
Like I could say " go get in the car". I don't name it specifically, coz its the only car in the driveway 😏
