They should probably avoid intervention, at least with direct military action. That's the way to nuclear engagement. But the pathetic capitalist sanctions are basically a token to loom like they're doing anything at all.
Overall, if it were realistic to do so they probably should defend their ally. But they won't because of future risk. That said though, it's well recorded what happened the last time a dictator started invading their neighbours...
