He's got no choice. He initially delayed his trip by 6 weeks, thinking it's plenty of time to finish his "excursion" in the Middle East.
No dice and rolling the dice is what he did, because zero strategic planning went into it.
It was amazing though to watch Trump sau a few words, without blaming Biden, Hillary, Obama or Harris for something, and mentioning how unfair for him not to get his $1B ballroom.
But this was just a banquet toast, give him time.

@Northwest Xi is smart to press the issue with a delusional President who lives in a kind of fantasy about personal relationships with dictators.
And, the US is in no position to really defend Taiwan anymore. Had the US kept its budget from going burst and stayed out of Iran, had more focus, then maybe. But the economy is in decline, inflation is destroying wages, and the Republican Party is indifferent and largely only concerned with being as awful as possible for their primaries.
I don’t think Xi knows just how strong his hand is. I suspect he wants to avoid a war if possible, and make the absorption of Taiwan closer to a fait accompli, perhaps with some BS “free economic zone” and pull a Hong Kong.
