Imagine the DOJ brings criminal charges against Chuck Schumer for "obstructing government operations" because of his role in the government shutdown.

It's probably easier to fabricate some stuff on Schumer that doesn't involve on the floor activities.

Your right, Trump still needs cover from impeachment, and he really doesn't need to shake it up.

Down the road, if you were really trying to clean house and set up a dictatorship, it might make sense, but I don't think that's what the Trump regime is all about, except maybe for Stephen Miller.

Mostly, I think this is just like all of Trump's business deals, a short term scam that will take in as much as possible before it falls apart.

From Article I, Section 6 of the U.S. Constitution:

"[Members of Congress] shall in all Cases, except Treason, Felony and Breach of the Peace, be privileged from Arrest during their Attendance at the Session of their respective Houses, and in going to and returning from the same; and for any Speech or Debate in either House, they shall not be questioned in any other Place."

I think even the lickspittle Supreme Court conservatives couldn't find a way to let the administration wiggle out of that one.
