I don't think Iran has enough ICBMs to do much damage to the US, but they probably do have the missiles to attack military bases and embassy buildings overseas. American lives are at risk, just not in the homeland.
Their best bet at retaliation will be to try to hurt us through cyberwarfare and strategic hacks. They've already been at it for years through online misinformation campaigns. It might not take any lives directly, but if it can stoke enough civil unrest, then they could in theory have us killing each other
