Some other fine patriots who wanted to 'take their country back'. [I Think That Donald Trump Is Dangerous For This Country]

'When and if fascism comes to America it will not be labeled 'made in Germany'; it will not be marked with a swastika; it will not even be called fascism; it will be called, of course, 'Americanism'. - Halford E. Luccock.

In 1939, 20,000 Americans rallied in New York's Madison Square Garden to celebrate the rise of Nazism -- an event largely forgotten from U.S. history. A NIGHT AT THE GARDEN, made entirely from archival footage filmed that night, transports audiences to this chilling gathering and shines a light on the power of demagoguery and anti-Semitism in the United States.

We’re not nearly as far away from this as we’d like to pretend. January 6 proved that yet again.

@bijouxbroussard Indeed, the U.K. had the blackshirts. But I’m rather pleased with how they met their end. Particularly the Battle of Cable Street.

@bijouxbroussard Yeah , we had the whole thing with Mosley and his blackshirts here , although I'm not sure that he was that popular outside of East London.

What did shock me about the Nazis in the US is just how widespread their support was. There were apparently pro-Nazi radio shows at the time that were pulling audiences of 30 million !

For some more context , here is an illuminating Q n A with the director of the film ;

@RodionRomanovitch That was back during Jim Crow, remember. We had a long-standing equivalent of apartheid in the U.S. De facto in some states, actual law in others.

America is a huge country with tolerance for crackpot and extremist views. (Just look at some of the crackpots and extremists here!) It obviously has good sides and bad sides. Even if one didn't know about this particular gathering, it shouldn't be at all surprising.
