Any of you UK people want to enlighten us on what’s going on with Boris Johnson? Yeah discuss him instead of US affairs that do NOT concern you. ☺️

Thank you in advance for removing yourselves from American politics!

He's resigned as leader of Conservative party but not yet as prime minister. He'll resign that once new leader is elected, probably end of summer so 3 months.
The new leader will then go to see the Queen and ask to form a government thus making them PM.
However some are saying he should go and the deputy pm stand in.
@OldBrit thank you but…Question is why did he resign?

Lost the confidence of the parliamentary Conservative party ie the MPs of his party.

Yesterday and Tuesday 50 ministers or other members of government (ie MPs with additional responsibility) resigned. About half of those were at cabinet level. Essentially today in Whitehall hardly anything can happen as departmentzs don't have the people in place to make decisions. He therefore could no longer govern. The secretary of state for education he appointed on Tuesday evening resigned this morning just as an example of how bad it was getting and many backbenchers refused offers to join government

Why?
Because he had lied (again) about something then two top ministers (chancellor of the exchequer and Secretary of state for health) both resigned saying his lack of integrity was unacceptable. Then the snowball of others resigning started.
@OldBrit wow 😮 Thank you for explaining so thoroughly…

Our constitution is odd and largely unwritten.

There was a vote a few weeks ago of the party MPs asking if they had confidence in him. He won that. Under rules of his party there couldn't be another vote until next year.

So after this latest lie this was one way to bring him down. But a messy way unfortunately. If they could have had another vote it would have been less bonkers.
@OldBrit Do you think he should have stepped down?

He should have resigned earlier so it wasn't so a coup to overthrow him. But this staying as pm until new leader is common.

May did it
Cameron did it
Blair did it
Etc

Thank you for this summation encapsulating the procedure. So is the queen just a figurehead?
@PatKirby for looks dahling
OldBrit · 61-69, M
@PatKirby no she is head of state. No act of parliament can become law without her signing it. Now since Queen Anne no monarch has refused to sign an act as long as it has passed the commons with a majority but....

Essentially everything is done at her behest and in her name. The pm has to discuss everything when they meet once a week. Daily she reads the correspondence to her from the government
@OldBrit oh I didn’t realize that. Thanks.

@NoGamesTolerated our constitution is old, odd, unwritten, complicated and hugely misunderstood even by a lot of us.
@OldBrit And here I thought the Queen was only serving to keep tradition intact.

Nope intregal part of the state. We have the state opening of Parliament. One of most important times for her to appear and rare outing of the Imperial State Crown only worn at that and in later part of coronation after St Edwards Crown used for the actual moment of corronation. Then imperial state to leave the Abbey showing her position as Head of state.

As I say [big]all[/big] legislation has to be signed by her to become law. Without her nothing can happen.
@OldBrit Thanks for enlightening me. I appreciate that. Now I know just how important she is to the UK…
