Do you smile at strangers?

No, that's inappropriate in our culture. Most people would either think you mistook them for someone you know, that you're some kind of solicitor and will pester them with some questionnaire or that you're just crazy. 😆 A smile at a stranger generally sends a signal that you want something from them, that you're trying to get their attention in order to start a conversation with them or something like that. Unless, of course, it's some specific situation like their pet coming to you or they are walking past a parent with a small child and the child says something funny but even then you're not supposed to keep an eye contact for too long, that's creepy and especially mothers with children are paranoid about that, lol. Like generally, it's not very well tolerated when strangers try to act too familiar. It's suspicious.

Yeah I usually try to smile & nod if I happen to make eye contact with someone. It's my way of acknowledging their presence. I almost feel rude if I make eye contact with someone & simply act like I see right through them or they're not there. But yeah if it's an attractive person, it's harder 😅 I get that.
I'll still do it though & if they smile back then that's nice 🙃
