Why do we feel satisfied and happy after doing an act of kindness?

Is it that healthy amount of narcissism that lies inside us? I just don't understand whyyyyyy we feel the things we feel.

It satisfies the 'nurturer' part of us. Not the narcissistic part of us, lol.

@SW-User OMG yes. My sister believes i should try a plant. Because the last time I kept a plant it died. So she doesn't trust me with cats. 馃樁

@assemblingaknob She knows you better, lol. Try the plant then. 馃槀

From an evolutionary perspective, we spent most of our evolution living in small tribes. We've only been living in societies for less than 10% of human history. Chances are that when we helped someone then, it was probably someone genetically related to us.

If the point of evolution is to survive long enough to successfully pass on our genetic information, then it would reward your chances of doing that by helping out those with similar genes. It's why people tend to care more about their families than about distant strangers. The happy feeling we get is a built-in feature of natural selection

@TinyViolins Well that makes a lot of sense.

Probably an evolutionary trait. If we all acted like sh*t all the time the species would've been extinct by now

@Elessar But dont we act like shit most of the rest of the time?

@assemblingaknob Exactly, this is just a counterweight

Because kindness is who we truly are. It's our nature.
When we do an act of kindness, we're aligning with our essence, and that feels good.

Evolution. Feeling good about being kind to our own kind helps propagate the species.

We are social beings. It's that simple
Because love is our true nature.
