It’s funny the things one remembers for no reason…
When I was a child, Pop bought me a pair of PF Flyers as my "weekend" shoes. Bright red, high top sneakers !
Mom said they looked "ridiculous", but she smiled when she saw how happy they made me and didn’t mind me wearing them when we went on errands.
Now I mostly see the new ones sold for men, but people occasionally sell them on EBay. The closest the women’s style comes (in a different brand) is this:
Not quite the same, but I wish I’d found a pair of the originals for my niece when she was little. They were a special part of my childhood; I wore mine until they fell apart.
I sent the above picture to her just now with: "If I bought these for you, would you wear them ?"
Your memory set off mine. I was one of six children, and Dad was a preacher. Back then, most preachers didn’t fly their private jets or drive Cadillacs. They still shouldn’t but they do.
Fashion was not a thing in my family. Mostly because it was not financially feasible.
Every few months Mom and Dad went out for a date night and came home with a new dress for Mom. Dad bought them because she wouldn’t. Left on her own, she’d buy cheapest. The ones Dad bought weren’t designer labels, but they didn’t scream “scullery maid” either.
I remember how Mom’s posture changed, wearing a new dress. She lit up.
Oooh i love them! I sure would have worn them as a kid and still would now! At 13 i bought myself a pair of banana yellow hi tops with birthday money! They were suede and towelling and i litterally wore them for years until they fell apart. X
Lol cute. I never had fancy shoes growing up except one time when I won my school's spelling bee. I was deathly shy and not very interested and my mom bribed me into participating 🤭. They were about $80 which was crazy expensive in 1999.
I remember PF Flyers. Never owned any, knock offs were all my brother and I got. But we loved them, brand names didn`t mean as much as it does now. Just damn lucky to have shoes.
@Degbeme Looks like ! But they’re not quite as expensive as the PF Flyers. Funny thing is, I never asked for the ones I had. Pop just saw them and thought I’d like them. I’m not sure how much they cost back then.
