Start as we mean to go on

I don't 'do' NYE, but actually had a really nice time last night. Mainly because everyone was safely at home and I wasn't worrying about my wife working a night shift.

We had dinner with our neighbours and came back to our house to count down to midnight. Did it 18 minutes early because the church clock is fast πŸ˜…

Then some bright sparks decided to let off fireworks even though it was pouring with rain and winds gusting up to 60mph πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ

At 2.15am my daughter climbed into our bed and stayed there. Her two cousins who were sleeping over in her room were apparently talking too much 🀣

We took advantage of a brief window in the incessant rain this morning to go for a refreshing walk. Now all remains is to finish up the Christmas leftovers ☺️

Happy New Year, one and all πŸŽ‰

My computer clock tends to drift off the proper time for some reason, so periodically I have to Google the time and reset it.

So last night I heard neighbors banging on pots at 11:58 pm (according to my computer) and I was puzzled. Then I remembered my clock is always off, and reset it.

@JoyfulSilence There was an intriguing comment on time accuracy, on the radio this morning.

The chimes, then the "bongs" of Big Ben, the famous tenor-pitch, hour bell of the clock in the Elizabeth Tower of the Houses of Parliament, are broadcast by the BBC on Radio Four, using a microphone in the bell chamber. The first strike is set to be the hour marker itself.

If you listen to the chimes on AM or FM radio, you hear them within micro-seconds of the strikes.

If you listen in the open air from the opposite bank of the Thames, you hear them a small fraction of a second late, by the speed of sound in air (about 340m/s).

If though you hear them on a DAB (Digital Audio Broadcast) radio they can be later still. Even dafter, if you have two such radios in the house they might not even emit them at the same times as each other!

@ArishMell

When I Google the time, I do not try to correct for the delay.

I once quiried the time from a friend on the edge of the observable universe, and he said it was 13.8 billion years BCE.

@JoyfulSilence You use Google to find the time?

I just glance at my wrist-watch! (There is a time display on the PC screen.)

Actually if the experience with the DAB radios is a guide, using the Internet as a clock seems very unreliable if you want accuracy within seconds... That's due to all the line delays.
