How soon do you prepare/submit your tax return after end of a fin year?

Here in oz the 'financial year' is July 1 to June 30 the following year.

The 'deadline' by which a personally prepared tax return for an individual must be submitted is Oct 31.

I used to salivate over getting it done and finalised ASAP but now I sit back and wait until Aug/Sep to sort it out. Most years I get a tax refund that is not massive (enough to pay some bills and/or make one extra mortgage payment) as I don't try to 'game' the system with shonky tax deductions, etc. My tax situation is simple since I have no investments, etc.

When does the fin year end in your country and how quickly do you try to get your return in? Do you usually get some sort of a refund?

The Taxable year ends December 31. Taxes are due by April 15 (occasionally a few days later when the 15th falls on a weekend). I meet with the tax people to get my return prepared in mid to late March. USA

I'm in no hurry to get my taxes done, as I usually have to pay in addition to what was withheld during the year. I like to mail my payment on April 1. Feels appropriate somehow.

I get into my accountant and get them done ASAP once I have the earning statements and all pertinent paperwork.
