Every dollar in your pocket has already been taxed before you even spend it .
A buck in your pocket represents about 1.86 earned .

@AthrillatheHunt yes taxes are cyclical. Every dollar earnt in pay is automagically taxed approx 30 pct straight away, so you're only getting 70 cents value. Then everything (almost) is taxed at purchase time (think sales taxes and similar) so that 70 cents here in Oz reduces to about 60 cents after GST is factored in.

@zonavar68 sounds about right. The way I see it , at my salary , I get more services than I pay for .
I put the break even number here in US at about 200k a year : if you earn less you鈥檙e getting a good value for your tax money . If you earn more you鈥檙e not .

@AthrillatheHunt That's interesting because if you looked at that based on what the minimum wages are in the USA and Australia, and factor in exchange rates between USD and AUD, you'd then have to say the break-even point is about A$400k, and nearly nobody earns that much in wages or salary here.

@zonavar68 Then it sounds like , by my logic, that the majority of your countrymen get a fair value for their tax dollars .
Many professionals earn north of 200k a year here in the greater NYC area .
