Hot take: Ace Ventura: Pet Detective isn't necessarily transphobic.

The movie invites us to laugh at transphobia by demonstrating how ridiculous it is. The title character literally takes a toilet plunger to his face when he realizes the woman he kissed is a biological male. Jim Carrey even said, "That was an honest completely homophobic reaction from that character. It was basically making fun of homophobia. It’s ridiculous. I’ve got a plunger on my face because I kissed a dude. It’s ridiculous."

I think it's even simpler than that. It's not about a phobia - it's about being duped, and that sets everyone off. Gay, straight or otherwise, being surprised by a kiss is a natural thing. Would we be having the ageism conversation if the character has been a 70-year-old woman?
