There are certain areas of a purely capitalist system that are self-destructive, inhumane, or wildly inefficient. Notice how during times of war most countries adopt socialist economic policies in order to make sure their armed forces are properly supplied. Also notice how many socialist policies in otherwise capitalist economies are designed to target areas in which capitalism fails - energy, health care/public health, transportation...
Socialized health care seems like a no brainer to me. So much of the US economy goes to health care - money and energy that could be better spent elsewhere.
