I think I would probably be pro-choice regardless…

because I see issues of birth control and reproductive choice as personal and private. But I have another reason for being passionate about it, going back to my childhood. I’ve discussed it before, but here it is:

When I was 12, a cousin, also 12, was raped by a family "friend", a 45 year old man. He told her that no one would believe her—and sadly, at first he was right. My cousin, beautiful, intelligent, a gifted musician and artist, was also a very sensitive girl.

When she discovered she was pregnant, in the days when abortion was illegal, after her parents hadn’t believed her, my cousin felt her life was ruined, so she committed suicide.

My mother and I had believed what she said, tried to convince her parents—and were told to stay out of it. After her death, especially when they discovered she had been pregnant, her parents took another hard look at the guy.

He got drunk and confessed…I was told. After the police stopped my uncle from beating him to death, they took the guy into custody.

Decades later, I discussed it with my mother. "How could they not have believed their daughter over that man ?" I asked.

Mom sighed. "That was unforgivable; and I think they never forgave themselves. They didn’t live much longer after losing her."

Awful. For a recent one, my great niece finally got pregnant after IVF. At 22 weeks ultrasound found an irreparable diaphragmatic hernia and cardiac defects incomparable with extra uterine life. Watching her go through a day of agony knowing the pregnancy would have to be terminated, feeling the baby kicking, I can't describe the anguish for the entire family. Luckily, she lives in a state that allows termination even at this stage. Can you imagine if she had to carry that fetus to term?
@samueltyler2 I’m so sorry.

That's horrible.

Tragically, many other girls have had similar experiences. I personally know one (raped by her mother's live-in boyfriend) and she wasn't believed by her mother when she told her. She didn't take her own life, but she remains traumatized to this day.

I'd be willing to bet the man who raped your cousin had other victims.
@Rutterman Indeed he did. That was something that came out during his trial. 🥺

Man..... I'm speechless. Fear of trivializing such a horrific event. What she must have been emotionally and physically going through... before.

I can't even imagine....

It's the innocent Bij that spend eternity in the light of God.

I know you may not agree...

But I have to....else my heart would break.

🩷
@Punxi I would take much comfort in that. 🥺
We've got to let women choose AND to educate men, the personal is political for both men and women.

@sarabee1995 As often is the case, we discovered that my cousin was not his only victim. 😞

I don’t think this story is so uncommon.
@trollslayer Sadly, it wasn’t. And now it will be a common occurrence again.

I think I would be, too, if only due to situations like this one.
