What is wrong with the government

The problem with the American government is that it is forever reactive. It is constantly responding to events that usually could have been a much smaller issue if it had been dealt with far sooner.

We operate in our government in panic mode. And in response, the government does a knee jerk reaction to quickly put into laws band aids, with the promise to return it it, to never hear from it again.

The key to a successful government is to see a problem long before it becomea a crisis and resolve it before it becomes an emergency situation.

But that would be boring for politics of we weren't constantly in reactive mode, but imagine how much money we would have saved if the government had found ways to resolve issues before they had to throw money at it, usually costing more at that time.

Imagine how well the government could actually be taking care of the issues of the citizens of it had already taken care of issues. Imagine how happier the nation would be if there wasn't this active deficit of preparation. Imagine how much more prosperous the nation would be having already created solutions and implemented them long before they were issues. We might actuallyhave contentment and less hate and anger.

But no. Our government is always running 10 crisis behind and constantly in panic mode, costing Americans so much more in money and stress.

That's the Dutch government as well, and probably most governments. Politicians don't want to explain to their voters why they're spending their money on solutions for things that aren't a problem, because many people won't understand that it will become a problem if they don't, or call it unnecessary in hindsight when it works.

We've seen that with the millennium bug: people worked tirelessly to patch every computer system in the world and when that was successful, people laughed that all the panic was over nothing.

And more recently with the pandemic: thanks to social distancing, the spread was kept to a level that hospitals could just about save most people, and half the world was like "it wasn't that deadly with proper care".

@NerdyPotato I would like to think as time goes on and the moral panic reduces, people would be used to the government taking care of things that they no longer question the need for spending and look at the need itself and the benefits of the need being taken care of before it becomes a necessity.
@FoxyQueen that would be great indeed, but countries like the USA make it hard to trust governments taking care of things...

On a related note - dismantling FEMA and the weather service right before the hurricane season becomes active..

So many of his voters might be affected this year.

We live in interesting times.

@Pretzel Red states always bear the brunt of extreme weather. The majority of people in red states still think trump is awesome and their champion. They asked for it, they got it.
The Government wants the People in a constant state of fear. Be Afraid this just happened *But* we the Government can fix it. They want the People in survival mode. The middle class pays for everything. The lower and upperclass pay for nothing. Tax breaks for the rich that the middle class pay for.

@Pitchblue moral panic is easier to put a bandaid that is oppressive to some group of people than if there is nothing to panic over.

Our current government is like that fire fighter who starts fire so he can show his fire fighting skills.

@Nick1 Exactly

That is what the voters demand. They have no patience for long-term plans and experiments.
