Guantanamo - Have you been there?

I came across this article and it was an eye-opener for me. Not that I'm surprised that it still exists, but the surprise is that it's a 'community' where American servicemen actually live and have 'American conveniences' just like any on any other military base.

I was there briefly while with the Marines in the 70s, there have been military personnel stationed there since at least the late 60s

It has been leased from Cuba to the U.S., without expiry, since 1903 as a coaling station and naval base.[3] It is the oldest overseas American naval base.[4] Since 1974, the U.S. has paid the Cuban government an annual sum equivalent to $4,085 in 1934 dollars (approximately $96,018 in 2024) to lease the bay.[5][6]

But we were there earlier; when the Spanish-American War ended, Spain gave up Cuba in the Treaty of Paris of 1898, and we wanted to keep a military presence there. The Wikipedia article has a little more about this.
