Mandatory chemical castration for certain crimes (Meloni is only proposing voluntary castration) has been legal in Poland since 2010. There is no evidence that it has any effect on recidivism and most doctors refuse to administer the drug as it is medically unethical.

It would be nice if conservative extremists could focus on issues that would really benefit children (education, regulation of social media, etc) rather than lurid punishments.

@SunshineGirl

Sounds like you like how the penal system works ... we need to change it and PUNISH repeat offenders
Therealsteve · 31-35, M
@SunshineGirl Not certain crimes, all crimes. Who is anyone to say that someone's suffering from a crime is any less than any other victim of any other crime? And then how about the mentally ill as well? And then how about people we just don't like the look of? There used to be plenty of laws supporting the castration of the disabled as social undesirables.

@pdockal I support any idea that might improve the criminal justice system. But as I have pointed out above there is no evidence that this measure has any positive impact (it is also used in Russia) and it is impractical to administer. Meloni will get a load of brownie points from her right wing sponsors without achieving much. Politicians should always be called out for empty gestures and rhetoric.

@SunshineGirl

Has anybody implimented a system that harshly punishs repeat offenders ?????
You don't sound like you want them properly punished
Maybe let's move the convicted sex offenders in with you & your family
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@pdockal As I pointed put above, Meloni's legislation is far less draconian than systems already in place in Poland and Russia . . which have had no demonstrable impact on reoffending.
pdockal · 56-60, M
@SunshineGirl

You using poland & russia as examples
Really 🤦

Why is it draconian ?
It's an atempt to stop recidivism
You don't have a solution just criticism

They should put the repeat sex offenders in your home & let you support them
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@pdockal I am using those countries as examples because they are the only ones who have tried it 🤷‍♀

I am passionate about reducing sexual violence and have plenty of solutions for improving current systems. Forgive me, but I am a little sceptical when politicians with no previous interest in the subject suddenly jump in with a headline grabbing initiative.

@SunshineGirl

Human rights in Poland are not always upheld in practice. From 1959 to 2019, the European Court of Human Rights has ruled that Poland violated human rights in 989 cases. In 2021, ILGA-Europe ranked Poland lowest in the European Union for protection of LGBT rights for the second year in a row.

Russia has consistently been criticized by international organizations and independent domestic media outlets for human rights violations.

Now why would you use their systems as examples ????
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@pdockal I am well aware. I visit my relatives there every 12 months or so. Poland is recovering from 18 years of mismanagement and authoritarian government by various right-wing and populist parties.

I am using those systems as examples because no others exist 🤷‍♀ Call me old fashioned, but I think policy decisions shoukd be made on the basis of empirical evidence rather than utopian schemes.
pdockal · 56-60, M
@SunshineGirl

So your trying to say Poland has only had human rights issues for the last 18 years ?????

Actually it's not utopian it's biblical ... eye for an eye

Your natural born polish ?????

No system exists that works 100% & is fair 100% nor will there ever be

To protect the innocent the criminals hide behind those protections
@SunshineGirl Conservatives are all about vibes and feelings not facts. If harsh punishment had any effect on crime, violent crime would have been eradicated by the middle ages.

But violent revenge feels good. It doesn't matter if it works to Conservatives.

There is also the magical thinking that state violence will result in positive change because it was decided arbitrarily that state violence is inherently good.
