Presumably because if it took the rational step of efficiently processing asylum claims in France and assisting with the transport of "legal migrants" to the UK mainland, the Daily Mail, Nigel Farage, et al, would be even more vociferous in their disapproval 🤔

@SunshineGirl they are not 'legal' migrants they're coming over on boats illegally.

@durinsBane1983 Yes, we've established that. So we need to invest in infrastructure to process their asylum claims (which are legal) efficiently, so those who are entitled to settle can cross legally and safely.

there are no easy answers to the problem as the labour government is finding out which in turn the coalition government found out from the outgoing labour government 14 years ago albeit on a much smaller scale. Interestingly I am told that the Channel Islands have no problems with illegal immigrants as immigrants are not eligible for any financial support until they have been in the island for 5 years and i think contributed in some way to the economy too.

@gandalf1957 Asylum seekers to the UK are not allowed to work while their claims are being processed . . which can take years. It's a Catch-22 situation which conveniently feeds negative stereotypes of economic parasitism.

What i can't get my head around is why it looks as though the UK may be about to build a new set of buildings in Albania to process claims for immigration in the same way as the Italians when the buildings that have already been paid for in Rwanda are about to be occupied by immigrants attempting to enter Germany at no cost to the Germans. Couldn't these buildings in Rwanda have been used to process claims the way the Italians are without further expense to the UK?

The government is not allowing illegal immigration, that's why it's illegal. The current government does recognize its obligations under international treaties though.
durinsBane1983 · 46-50, M
@Sharon so it's perfectly ok for illegal immigrants to come across the channel on boats and stay here? which is what's presently happening.

@durinsBane1983 Who's claiming it's OK? It wouldn't be illegal if it were.
