Similar to surge pricing for Uber rides, some restaurants are considering charging you more when it gets busy. Basically, price gouging. Considering that as scale increases their expenses go down per order, this is pure greed.

A few local restaurants had an early bird dinner discount with meals that were mini versions of the dinner menu. Not to be confused with the lunch menu. Like from 4:30 to 6 p.m. It went over well.
@Heartlander happy hours and early bird specials have been around a long time. Who doesn't like a bargain.

@JonLosAngeles66 :) I've been around for a while also. I'm not sure how surge pricing is different from early bird type pricing. Except maybe as a way to spread out the lunch/noon crowd surge. Or maybe a change for fast food restaurants that usually don't do early bird type pricing.
@Heartlander happy hours are designed to lure people into your establishment when you need business. Surge Pricing is increasing the price when people most need to eat and your profit margin is highest. Classic price gouging.

@JonLosAngeles66 That's also the intent of early bird, to take the strain away from the dinner surge and create opportunity for new business. Early bird and happy hour are not the same. Early birds get rewarded for eating early, but with surge pricing you get penalized for eating later. The end result is the same but surge pricing would make a restaurant look like they are gouging :) From ourselves, we're either early birds or late-late diners. Don't do crowds.

@JonLosAngeles66 :) the surge sounds like a way to piss off customers and send them elsewhere.
@Heartlander I agree
