59% in US Living Paycheck to Paycheck as Corporate Profits Surge to All-Time Highs

Jake Johnson, Aug.30, 2022

Corporate profits hit a record $2 trillion in the second quarter. Meanwhile, many workers are unable to afford a $400 emergency payment. A new report out Monday shows that 59% of U.S. consumers were living paycheck to paycheck last month and many were unable to afford an emergency expense of $400—all while the country's corporations enjoy record-shattering profits.

Compiled by PYMTS and LendingClub, the analysis finds that nearly three in five consumers were living paycheck to paycheck in July as high inflation continues to eat into workers' inadequate wages.

"A large share of consumers are essentially living on the razor's edge."
While the July figure represents a slight decline from the June level of 61%—leading the corporate press to put a positive spin on the data—the report stresses that the share of consumers living paycheck to paycheck "has trended upward" over the past year, "increasing from 54% in July 2021."

So, big companies that have invested big bucks developing a product or service, more on producing it, marketing it, delivering it, providing jobs for hundreds or thousands of people to make a living wage, and show a profit for investors - those corporations are the bad guys?

Corporations making money is not a bad thing.

@Budwick The problem is corporations have bribed many of our Congress persons with campaign contributions. Much of Congress represents corporate interests rather than all the people. Corporations get bail-outs, subsides, tax refunds and huge tax cuts (which they use entirely for stock buybacks).

In America the gap between the rich and poor ever wider. There is wide-spread poverty and homelessness. Instead of giving tax cuts and bail-outs to greedy corporations our tax money should go to affordable health care, education, public services, job training and placement programs; programs that serve ALL the people.

So, vote for republicans!

@Budwick Both Republicans and Democrats take corporate bribes. There are a few exceptions, such as Bernie Sanders. We the People must find ways to break the unfair hold of corporate money on our Congress.

LOL, and you really believe corporations pay taxes, I could fix the problem with a pen, just like sippy-cup screwed it up with his pen

Jeff bezos could give every employee a 10,000 bonus and still be a trillionair. But most of his employees still only make 15 an hour.
