No, it was not an overreaction. After all, this is the man who demonized his predecessor by demanding his birth certificate twice, making all kinds of unfounded accusations (and clearly still doing so), libeled his opponents at every turn and ran the most divisive, ugliest campaign in modern times. He deserves every bit of crap that's blowing back on him now. And if it were really a fair and just system he'd have to resign.
