It was an SUV and SUV's don't have trunks. An SUV normally has a rear cargo area accessed through a liftgate, not a separate, enclosed trunk like a sedan.

While the trunk of an SUV is not conventional in the way of a trunk in a sedan, it is intended for use for carrying cargo and so it is both appropriate to call it a trunk and to question why an adult would be so obsessed as to use it for the express purpose of not being left behind.

You might also note that an EV does not run on petrol, but when it is running low on power, it is common to refer to the condition as needing a fill-up.
