17-Year-Old Charged With 13 Counts in Mississippi Home Invasion; Couple Killed, Officers, Infant Injured
Residents of Simpson County, Mississippi, are mourning Billy Blair, 74, and his wife, 71-year-old Virginia Carol Blair, as longtime community and church figures remembered for their faith, service, and business presence following their deaths in a fatal home invasion last week.
Family members, church leaders, and neighbors described the couple as deeply rooted in the community and active for decades at New Hebron Baptist Church.
Church members said Virginia Blair served as a pianist at the church for roughly 30 years, while Billy Blair participated in multiple church roles and helped operate the couple’s tire business in Magee.
Following news of their deaths, congregants gathered in prayer and placed flowers on the piano she regularly played during services, marking her long-standing role in church worship.
Authorities said the couple was killed inside their Mendenhall home after a break-in that escalated into a violent confrontation with law enforcement.
Records show family members requested a welfare check after being unable to reach them, prompting deputies to respond to the residence where the burglary was already in progress when officers arrived.
Law enforcement officials said responding deputies encountered gunfire upon arrival, triggering a prolonged standoff at the scene.
Investigators said the suspect barricaded himself inside the home for an extended period before later exiting through a rear door and attempting to flee on foot.
He was apprehended after a pursuit involving deputies and a state trooper, according to WLBT.
The suspect, identified in court filings as 17-year-old Cordarius Laray Hobbs, faces 13 charges connected to the incident.
Those charges include two counts of capital murder, one count of burglary, and multiple counts of aggravated assault involving both civilians and law enforcement officers.
Court records allege he fired shots during the confrontation and is also accused of actions that placed additional individuals at risk during the incident.
Authorities said four officers were injured during the confrontation. An infant was also injured. Officials confirmed the injuries were all not life-threatening.
A Simpson County deputy who was struck during the exchange has since been released from the hospital and is expected to recover fully, according to law enforcement officials.
Investigators said Hobbs initially indicated during the standoff that he intended to surrender, but later exited the residence and attempted to flee before being taken into custody.
A state trooper discharged a weapon during the pursuit, striking Hobbs. Authorities said his injuries were not life-threatening, and he was transported for treatment before being placed in custody.
