When a crisis ensues, usually the first thing a President will ask is, "Where are the carriers?"
But with Donald Trump, he asks "Where is my Big Mac that I ordered?"
CVN-68 USS Nimitz is in Bremerton, preparing for decommissioning (A BIG MISTAKE).
CVN-69 USS Dwight D. Eisenhower has been in Norfolk and has completed a Planned Incremental Availability (PIA) maintenance period that began in January 2025. She should be ready for deployment.
CVN-70 USS Carl Vinson is at her home port in San Diego undergoing maintenance and probably won't be able for deployment until the spring.
CVN-71 USS Theodore Roosevelt is also at her home port in San Diego and could be ready for deployment.
CVN-72 USS Abraham Lincoln is deployed in the Arabian Sea.
CVN-73 USS George Washington is in Japan at her home port of Yokosuka.
CVN-74 USS John C. Stennis is at Newport News and undergoing her midlife Refueling and Complex Overhaul (RCOH) which will likely take most or all of 2026 to complete.
CVN-75 USS Harry S. Truman is at Norfolk, preparing for her RCOH.
CVN-76 USS Ronald Reagan is at Bremerton, undergoing scheduled maintenance.
CVN-77 USS George H.W. Bush is underway off the U.S. East Coast.
CVN-78 USS Gerald Ford is deployed in the eastern Mediterranean.
Fewer carriers means longer deployments and more needed maintenance. We need at least 15 carrier groups, which is why I strongly advise another re-fueling of the Nimitz now, as well as of Dwight D. Eisenhower, Carl Vinson and Theodore Roosevelt. Only then should we decommission carriers once more Ford-class carriers are commissioned on a one-for-one basis.
