The future of shopping in America: “We’re not going to let just anyone wander in off the street” (actual quote)

Photo above - Crash barriers? Check! Only one way in or out? Check! Security staff at the door? Check! Welcome to our store - please show your $65 membership ID before entering.

How much do stores lose to shoplifting annually? Nobody knows for sure, but estimates start at around $50 billion, and go up from there (see link below).

Whether you – as a customer – personally feel inconvenienced by shoplifting doesn’t so much depend on where you live. It's true that LA and San Francisco police have about a 2 hour response time to shoplifting calls – but whether your local supermarket or department store closed permanently because they couldn’t stop the shoplifting losses. If you need to drive a half hour, or make 2 bus changes, it's a bummer. This is how “food deserts” are created. It’s not the evil landlords and mall owners.

Costco – and other big box/warehouse stores – say they’ve found the solution. And you’re not going to like it, either.

“Paid memberships with photo ID member card. Just one way in and one way out of the store. Security people to keep non-members out, and to check the cash register receipt of anyone trying to leave.”

If you already have a Costco or BJs membership, you’re probably nodding your head, and are annoyed. My local BJs is in the vanguard. They have steel and concrete crash barriers at the entrance, to deflect someone from ramming a stolen truck through the door overnight. Two security people – for entrance and exit - during business hours. Don’t bring your own reuseable shopping bags. That REALLY pisses the exit guards off, and they will pull EVERYTHING out of your bags, and check them off your receipt, one by one, before you can finally trundle off to your car.

This is so annoying, I cancelled my membership in December, saving $65 a year. BJs’ prices are no longer that much lower than the average supermarket. I’m not going to buy a 55 inch TV from BJ’s anyway. I’d order that online - I still have an Amazon prime membership. My TV will be delivered faster than going through the store checkout line.

BJ’s adds insult to injury by refusing to staff human beings at their cash registers. It’s mostly self- checkout now. You’d think this would be a big opportunity for shoplifting, but don’t forget the guys at the door. In some locations there are armed police. During covid 19 they had an entire squad of goons in black tee shirts with the word "guard". Apparently weightlifters and martial arts people

BJ’s knows customers aren't happy. Management is trying to sweeten the deal. Experimenting with things like gas pumps which are a dime less per gallon than the station 2 blocks away. LP gas refilling/exchange. A gauntlet of home improvement and cellular salespeople near the entrance and exit. Wait – that’s not a solution. No I don’t want my bathroom remodeled – I’m a renter. Yes I’m already on the AT&T plan.

What Costco and BJ’s apparently ARENT experimenting with is keeping the proof of ID membership card but ditching the annual fee. I refuse to spend $60 to stand in a checkout line longer than the one at my local Piggly Wiggly supermarket.

The future is now. We need positive picture ID just to shop. But not to vote. Welcome to the greatest nation in the free world.

I’m just sayin’ . . .

Isn't it amazing that back in the days of customer service, where there were floorwalkers helping direct customers ("Are You Being Served?") while keeping an eye out for shoplifters, and salespeople to assist you (while keeping an eye out for shoplifters) and undercover security patrolling, there didn't seem to be such an issue. But corporate retailers decided the only way to compete with online merchants was price (never going to happen) rather than customer service, and cut everything to bare bones and now are surprised at the unintended consequences.

The girlfriend of one of my college buddies, who was a criminology major, worked part-time for Montgormery Wards (for those who remember it) as an undercover security person. Idly appearing to be shopping as she wandered about, but eyes on shoppers rather than the merchandize.

@dancingtongue home depot and Lowes both have "floor walkers".

they don't know where anything is. their purpose is unclear

@SusanInFlorida We had a local family oriented hardware store that was a franchisee of ACE hardware; been here more than 50 years. They had floor walkers who are very knowledgeable in most aspects, and if the one you had wasn't expert in that particular facet he knew who among his co-workers was and called them. You can already see the deterioration as both the number and expertise of the floorwalkers is rapidly declining since the acquisition. Might as well go to Home Depot on Lowe's.

@dancingtongue the "Ace" in my mom's town imploded into insolvency when a Lowes opened about a mile away.

the Ace was great - at no extra charge they would assemble your gas grill and deliver it.

I don't understand, this was always their set up and it's not that annoying. You've always needed a membership to shop there and there was a person who just puts a check mark after they look in your cart but they don't look that hard. They glance and mark, then you're out.

Cost Co always been like that, I don't get why you're just now hearing the news, this is at least 5 years old by now

@SatanBurger my initial rationale for joining BJs was the ultra low prices on things like:

- mega packs of Bounty paper towels (12 rolls = 30 triples)
- 36 pack cases of diet coke
- bulk frozen shrimp

but the prices on these things have soared everywhere. i can no long justify paying $65 annual fee for the miniscule savings on soda or paper towels.

@SusanInFlorida your original argument wasn't that though, it was how they checked your receipt and you need a membership. Both of which they've done since they opened.

@jshm2 posssibly. this is also the reason large plastic clamshell packaging exists - to make it more difficult to slip consumer tech like burner phones, thumb drives, etc into a backpack or purse.

used to be that cigarettes and high end sneakers were the most reliable shoplifting bait in downtown areas. they have immediate sidewalk value.

the trend today is to steal stuff en-masse, and resell it on ebay. clothing especially.

I was going to apply for a security guard job. But was turned off at the training only being 5 days in a class room. That's not enough to learn how to deal with problem people. 😏 I'd taser at least 6 people before morning coffee!
