1. Neither Social Security nor Medicare were designed to pay the full cost of living & health care needs of the elderly; it was a safety net.
2. Few, if any, can live on them alone. So it is not like you are carrying all of us on your back.
3. Social Security, and to a lesser extent, Medicare were envisioned as trust funds, an endowment to be invested with the income primarily paying the bills. But Congress has deigned over the years to continually borrow from them, then having to borrow from elsewhere to pay what is owed in SSA and Medicare, and it is the debt burden that is the real killer. It is the credit card cycle that too many individuals fall into, where they wind up making minimal payments that essentially only pay the interest on the debt and never the principal.

Now that you have brought it out, the 60% of the budget that went to pay for Medicare and Social Security wouldn't have been necessary if the trust funds haven't been raided by Congress. Those funds are long gone. Congress is now using 60% of the current taxes collected to meet pay outs to the old and the sick.
