Compare & contrast Noriega 1990 vs Maduro 2026.

I don’t recall as big of an outcry in 1990.

Actually there was a fair amount of criticism in some circles and it was correctly called an illegal kidnapping with Noriega too.

i believe he said they went to central/south america. Basically payment to the contras.

Contras were fighting against socialist regimes in South America. Don't you think they were mercenaries paid by Uncle Sam?
@sree251 The contras were CIA terrorists. Nothing more.

Those contra "terrorists" were destabilizing those South American national governments not amenable to control by the US. What is that book given to Obama by Hugo Chavez?
On December 15, 1989, Panamanian leader Manuel Noriega and his legislature declared a "state of war" with the United States. Around that time, Panamanian armed forces also had a shootout with US Marines, ultimately killing 1st Lt. Robert Paz.

Declaring war with the US and shooting at US forces gave Bush a pretty solid excuse for fighting back against Panama and Noriega.

Like Maduro, there was a US grand jury indictment of Noriega, which was later dismissed in a Florida court.

I think the indictment against Maduro was secret until his capture.

In the case of Maduro, I can't see any basis. Maduro has diplomatic immunity as a foreign head of state. The 1988 indictment against Noriega that I linked to above was dismissed on more or less those diplomatic immunity grounds.

For once, we are in agreement. Don't make this a habit. I can't have doubt cast on my sanity.

In the case of Noriega, I think his declaration of war made him a legitimate target for military capture.

A declaration of war alone has significant reason for retaliation?
@sree251 Declaration plus the shooting, as I wrote at the top of this thread.

I've been against tRump since he rode down his golden escalator in 2015. How long did it take you to oppose tRump??

I can't remember about you; are you a denier of anthropogenic climate change? Are you a vaccine denier? Are you a Covid conspiracy theorist?

I base my judgment on Trump's conduct on the way he discharges his duties as public servant. I don't oppose him. I want him removed immediately from office by Congress. Unfortunately, there is no provision in the Constitution for summary dismissal in the manner we all get fired from our jobs.
There were some objections. But Bush Sr wasn’t talking about stealing resources, nor was he facing a scandal where he refused to cooperate in turning over files. And Noriega did declare war against the U.S., which made our claim of “self-defense” more credible.

I believe he declared war on the us. He also attacked americans.

And this is about stealing resources.

@Carla I believe he was also a double agent, and double crossed us.
American people seem to do evil together in lock step and accept it readily. Same as ever!!!!
