While you can say “Guns don’t kill people; people kill people” it is equally true to say:
“A mass shooter can’t perform a mass shooting without a gun.”
And the first statement isn’t a statement of fact anyway. And it doesn’t excuse the gun nuts opposing bans of assault weapons, large capacity magazines, bump stocks, etc. Nor does it negate the need for extensive background checks, waiting periods, and other measures to keep guns out of the hands of mentally unstable individuals.

interesting.
I wondering about the psychology behind it...
Could it be that the people that did the shootings went out to buy an assault weapon after some incident and decided to buy one to "get even" with people?
Were the the increased shootings by people that bought new firearms just to go out and shoot somebody or did they already own them.
NOT disputing the figures - it's just that the "why " and "how" always intrigues me - after I"m disgusted by their repugnant actions.

It doesn't stop people from being violent. just dramatically lowers the death count. Which is a good thing.

Yes.

@SomeMichGuy Ever notice how all the gun nuts delete their posts?
Just an indirect and cowardly way of admitting that they have no defensible position or convincing arguments.

It’s strange how other countries have reservists with assault weapons kept at home, yet have very minimal shooting incidents.
Is it the guns or is it perhaps the intense competition and individualism that is an American cultural hallmark?

@meJess You are using a very select group of people as your control group. “Reservists” are part of a military or at least militia; not the general population of a country where 40% are obsessed with gun ownership.
In our own military, mass shootings are quite rare. They do happen (e.g. The Fort Hood shooter) but nothing like we are seeing in this country overall. What’s more, a reservist isn’t particularly likely to be obsessed with gun ownership—many never handle to gun at all other than to keep it in good condition and to qualify.

according to whom? because the fed's own study (via rand) concluded that it made absolutely no difference
It was never a gun problem, as mass shootings were so rare/few and far between before 2010's+/- that they weren't even factored into most statistics
hyperbole and false statements of fact certainly isn't helping the gun control nutjobs...

@wildbill83 Nice try with the strawman. The RAND review says evidence on assault weapons bans is inconclusive on some measures, not that the ban provenly did nothing. It also notes even limited evidence that high-capacity magazine bans massively reduce mass shootings, a nuance you ignored.
Multiple peer-reviewed studies, including one from the Journal of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery, found that the Clinton-era ban years saw mass-shooting deaths significantly lower, and that fatalities rose sharply after the ban expired.
Fact.
So no, you don’t get to wave a single ambiguous line from RAND and pretend that dismantling the ban didn’t coincide with a huge spike in mass shooting deaths. If “being rare before the 2010s” were the whole story, we wouldn’t see that post-ban surge. Unfortunately, the facts say otherwise.

The "Guns don't kill people" crowd certain changes their minds about books making people gay though.
bijouxbroussard · F
@FoxyGoddess Isn’t that interesting ? They’re also convinced that gun control laws won’t slow mass shootings—but that draconian laws will prevent women seeking abortions.
Crazywaterspring · 61-69, M
These random shootings make you reconsider spending much time in public. Some loser with a gun decides everyone needs to have a bad day.
SomeMichGuy · M
@Crazywaterspring Agreed! Look at how Gabby Giffords got shot, or people in clubs, or people at the music event in Las Vegas...
But it also makes you want to homeschool (a bad option for most) or not let your kid go to college (arguably, worse!).

@jshm2 Those who commit these horrific crimes are deeply flawed. Those who fight tooth and nail to keep the laws as they are or even remove the very few legal restraints that still exist are even more deeply flawed.
SpudMuffin · 61-69, M
@jshm2 you don't need to be a good shot when you can just go full auto. 🤣
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
And MAGA will deny the data or just claim it's the price we pay for our "freedom" to own killing machines.

@ChipmunkErnie …just like Charlie Kirk did…

People with guns kill people. And people with airplanes and dynamite and poison and bombs kill people. whats the common denominator...... people.

@Frostcloud No matter how they try to phrase it: there just is NO reasonable way to justify the sale of assault weapons, large capacity magazines, bump stocks, etc.
KunsanVeteran · M
@Frostcloud It’s really as simple as this: “When people oppose common sense gun control laws, what they are doing—whether consciously or unconsciously—is enabling mass murderers.”
SomeMichGuy · M
@KunsanVeteran Agreed on both of your last 2 replies.

You made yourself a target when you stepped to me. Blocking doesn't stop me from existing just like hiding the guns doesn't get rid of killer mindsets but we all already knew you prefer to ignore things

@Jackaloftheazuresand funny, a “leftist” (Clinton) WAS addressing the root of the problem. But for Republicans, addressing gun violence was unacceptable
Reason10 · 70-79, M
KKKlinton's gun control scam DID NOT REDUCED MASS SHOOTING DEATHS.
G7J2O · M
@Reason10 Yelling doesn’t change the data. Multiple peer-reviewed studies show mass-shooting deaths were significantly lower during the 1994–2004 assault weapons ban and rose sharply after it expired.
You can argue about causation and definitions like an adult, or you can just scream “DID NOT” like a child and hope volume replaces evidence. Spoiler: it doesn’t.
Facts don’t care how mad you are.😁
