PA Governor Josh Shapiro Signs CROWN Act Outlawing Hair Discrimination Amidst State Crises

Pennsylvania families are watching their electricity bills spike by 6% this December, with another 15% increase looming in the new year. Hospitals are shuttering across the commonwealth, and roads resemble obstacle courses more than transportation routes.

Yet Governor Josh Shapiro spent Tuesday afternoon at a West Philadelphia hair salon, surrounded by cameras and activists, signing legislation that addresses what Democrats apparently consider the crisis of our time.

The emergency and the existential threat to Pennsylvania’s future…? Hair discrimination. Yes, really.

While PECO energy customers brace for crushing rate hikes and rural communities lose their last remaining hospitals, Governor Shapiro signed the CROWN Act—Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair—into law, making it illegal to discriminate against someone based on their hairstyle.

The law specifically protects “locs, braids, twists, coils, Bantu knots, afros, and extensions,” treating any workplace grooming standard that affects these styles as racial discrimination punishable under state law.

Pennsylvania is now saved....

Governments are allowed to do more than one thing at a time, you know. For balance, you might question why Donald Trump is building a glittering new ballroom and "triumphal arch" at a time when families are struggling with inflation (or perhaps not, as the president claims to have inflation under control).
sunsporter1649 · 70-79, M
@SunshineGirl LOL, and how many good paying union jobs are being created by the privately funded Ballroom construction?
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@sunsporter1649 The question is about priorities. You suggested the governor is negligent by dividing his legislative attention at a time of rising prices. Why not apply the same logic to the president? The "philanthropically funded ballroom" (because of course those "private" donors expect nothing in return for their cash) is not going to bring down utility bills.
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@sunsporter1649 Likely very few. We hear the same excuse from property speculators in Britain: "our development will create x-thousand jobs".

Claimeth they, Rhubarb.

Yes, it will keep many direct employees and self-employed sub-contractors, busy and is good for their suppliers; and all that is of course very important; but it won't "create" much new employment at all, and for each person or company it will last for only as long as the particular work.

I think they estimate the total workforce for the entire project, and call that "creating" their posts.
sunsporter1649 · 70-79, M
@SunshineGirl So the construction industry should be eliminated, since by your definitation they are not perminate jobs, eh
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@sunsporter1649 No-one said that, certainly not SunshineGirl.

I pointed out the developers' "creation" of employment claim is largely specious. It creates the work, maintaining existing employment among skilled tradespeople, not the employment figures.

The tradespeople themselves go on to other sites once their immediate work is completed.
sunsporter1649 · 70-79, M
@ArishMell So sleepy joe's claims of creating 2,000,000 jobs is total bullschiff, eh
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@sunsporter1649 I don't know because I do not the trades and industries he meant, nor how they might generate so many genuinely new posts - though it seems a very bold claim and obviously assumes two million people looking for work in the near future.

Any capitalist ecomomy might be able to maintain existing levels of employment but will create vast numbers of genuinely new posts only by greatly expanding all manner of forms of employment, and the training to match for many of those posts.

Assuming of course technical developments don't reduce the number of staff needed to perform any given work anyway.

Nor have I any idea of "Joe's" health, nor denigrate your politicians at such a personal level. I asssume you mean Joe Biden but I don't take sides in your country's domestic party politics.

I was observing purely how property developers and estate-agents like to talk up their schemes to attract support.
IronHamster · 56-60, M
@SunshineGirl Like it or not, that ball room will be an important part of the White House for many years to come.

I think you are just jealous because Obama and Biden weren't that caring.
IronHamster · 56-60, M
@ArishMell Free markets, what you call "capitalism", are the most morally superior systems, and the best hope for the poor.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@IronHamster This is not a judgement on the merits or otherwise of the ballroom. It is whether or not governments can legitimately pursue projects of secondary importance to the big issues of the economy, health, etc. The OP suggested that the governor of PA was negligent by doing so, and I challenged him with the example of Trump's building project.
sunsporter1649 · 70-79, M
@SunshineGirl Yup, your feelings are more important than actual projects delivering jobs
@SunshineGirl
Governments are allowed to do more than one thing at a time, you know.

Absolutely! And isn't wonderful that Josh has taken it upon himself to spend tax payer dollars to ensure people's hair rights aren't being violated?
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@BizSuitStacy As I'm sure you are already aware, discriminating against some hairstyles is a proxy for racial discrimination. The legislation therefore strengthens existing law.

And it will of course apply to and benefit everyone . . even septuagenarians with expensive hairpieces.

@ArishMell @SunshineGirl Sunstroke's favorite trick is attempting to put words in your mouth; without that trick all he has is silly cartoons🤣😂

@sunsporter1649 says
joe's claims of creating 2,000,000 jobs ...

The Covid jobs recovery is complete and then some

There are more than 5,000,000 (FIVE MILLION) more people employed in mid 2024 than during the peak under Trump. Just read the graph.

sunsporter1649 · 70-79, M
@ElwoodBlues LOL, the demonocrat kung flu shutdown forced thousands of businesses to close, millions of jobs lost, sleepy joe's claim to creating 2,000,000 jobs is just letting people to go back to their old jobs, figures don't lie, but liars figure

@sunsporter1649 How many US jobs are being created by him sending $40bil to Argentina?
sunsporter1649 · 70-79, M
@Vin53 The same amount that barry big ears created when barry big ears sent a billion in cash to the raghead terrorists
ItsMeMorgue · 46-50, F
@sunsporter1649 I've got a fun idea. Instead of putting your racism on display, why don't you answer people's questions?

@ElwoodBlues Do you love how @sunsporter1649 just keeps saying the quiet part out loud? How he just doubles down on the racism with every single comment?
@ItsMeMorgue And changes topic with almost every single topic, attempting to put more words in someone's mouth🤣😂
