When I see western leftist complain that billionaires don't need billions, they should share

I always imagine starving children in third world countries believing that westerners don't need the latest iphone, a fridge worth of food etc and should share.

IF we were in a world where people actually loved each other there would be total equality.

If ALL people actually cared about, all other people's, not just some but all other people .... would there be the rich, would there would be the poor. Would there be people lacking food, shelter, clothing, water, physicians, medicines or would all these things come naturally and freely out of love for each other.

Well in this world it's always IF
Therealsteve · 31-35, M
@Charity There wouldn't be equality - as we aren't all equal in ability, talent, intelligence, drive, propensity for sacrifice, ambition, temperament, geographic location etc :)
Charity · 61-69
@Therealsteve I didn't say that everyone would have the same equal mental or physical capabilities.

Equality as referring to treatment of others / as referring to sharing with all / as referring to no rich no poor but evenly distributed.

Equality as referring to no homeless / no one hungry / no one going without clothing / clean water

The sarcasm you just tried to use needs adjustment.

Westerners are not accumulating and hoarding refrigerators full of food and iPhones. Most need one and have one. Billionaires are accumulating more and more all the time. Instead of it being something they need it's just a scorecard to be shown off at the club.

@Jackaloftheazuresand Thank you for sharing this! :)
MoveAlong · 70-79, M
@Therealsteve It's not a one size fits all. Do what works for you.
Therealsteve · 31-35, M
@MoveAlong There is some sort of alternate reality wherein spending $200 on a phone that facilitates the same necessities as the $1000 phone doesn't save you $800?

And absolutely, do what works for you and don't pretend that the consequences of your choices are the fault of someone else being more successful than you.

You've been doing a lot of thinking recently . .

@SunshineGirl Just needed a little break between doing my two degrees.
I guess you have poor number sense, though we can have items which are not a necessity.
@Therealsteve Lmao

Number sense...the ability to understand relative sizes of numbers.

The national median family income in the US in 2024 was

$83,730/yr

per https://theworlddata.com/median-family-income-in-us/

When we speak of "billionaires", we are often referring to top US billionaires, but here is a current list from Forbes of the top 25 in the world:

The LOWEST person/family on that list has

73.8 G$

if you use the SI prefixes.

If all of that were in CDs getting 5% APR, compounded daily, over 30 days, there'd be MONTHLY interest of

73.8 G$ * { [1+ (.05/365)]^30 - 1}
= 73.8 G$ * { [1.000136986...]^30 ‐ 1}
= 73.8 G$ * { 1.00411776 ‐ 1}
= 73.8 G$ * { 4.11776E(-3) }
= 0.303891 G$
or

304 M$ for the 3 significant figures given

If you consider tithing by the median family, that would be

($83,730/yr * (1 yr/12 mo) * 0.1 tithe)
= $697.75/mo or let's say 0.698 k$ per median family

So that would take

304 M$/(0.698 k$/family)
= 304,000 k$/(0.698 k$/family)
= 435,530 median income families
or about 436 k-families of median income.

The pooling of the tithes from all of those families is nowhere near the interest tge 25th richest guy can make at a crappy rate of interest.

That's awareness of number sense.
Therealsteve · 31-35, M
@SomeMichGuy "lmao" not all of us live in the US, so I don't care for your numbers. Also, "look how much these billionaires have!". So?

I always think of all the leftist elitists who complain about other people having too much money.
Alyosha · 36-40, M
Not really comparable. Do you even know what the marginal value of the dollar is?
Therealsteve · 31-35, M
@Alyosha Your reply plays into an interesting theme. Interesting in how it falls into what was taught in my degree that covers populational health and the cultural attitudes towards various medical models.
