There are 45,000 US flights a day. Air traffic controllers are calling in sick. Can anyone do the math on this economic impact?

Photo above - hey kid, I told you . . . go back to your seat. We won't be landing until a week from Sunday because the air traffic controllers all called in sick . . . (screen shot courtesy of the film "Airplane")

If anything has the potential to short circuit the government shutdown, it's the air traffic controllers calling in sick. I confess I didn’t see this coming. They probably didn’t either, until Trump told them they were working without pay until the shutdown was over. And THEN added that back pay owed to them during the shutdown might not be paid. See link below.

This sick-out evidently started in Burbank, California. A bunch of Hollywood producers and tech moguls keep their private jets parked there. Those are all grounded now. The control tower is completely unstaffed, but probably not the cocktail lounge. Someone COULD take off, but it would be a federal crime. Corporate pilots aren’t going to risk losing their licenses, no matter how much Jerry Bruckheimer (producer) or Elon Musk bribes and threatens them.

Possibly more important than America’s economy screeching to halt (if this spreads), is the impact to the NFL and MLB. I’m being satiric here, but it’s true. Imagine if all the NFL games had to be cancelled because the visiting team couldn’t travel. Imagine if the baseball playoffs and World Series were put on indefinite hold. The mobile betting industry and Vegas would shut down too. Liquor sales might plummet. Doordash and Uber eats would be the only jobs left standing.

If this spreads, America won’t even be able to fly any migrant detainees to Wakanda or Zamunda for safekeeping. They will be stuck in Alligator Alcatraz forever. Unless THOSE guards start calling in sick, too.

It’s unclear whether Hollywood and the Artificial Intelligence moguls trying to put the rest of us out of work will blame democrats or republicans for this fiasco. On the one hand, they almost all hate Trump. On the other hand, they also hate higher taxes, which are a certainty if congress keeps dreaming up new stuff to spend on that we can’t afford. Everyone says all the new taxes should fall on corporations. We're all going to put out of work because of AI, anyway.

I have no travel plans this coming weekend. If I did, I would probably drive anyway, since flights are so expensive, and you get charged extra for carryon luggage and a bottle of water now. Next the bathrooms will probably be coin operated. Will we start hearing that are 10-mile-long traffic jams because all the flights are grounded? Maybe the toll booth attendants will start a sick-out too.

I’m just sayin’ . . .

Air traffic controller shortages lead to canceled flights, delays nationwide

That’s frightening but what choice do these workers have they are proving how essential they are by not being able to work. Not to mention how unnecessary most air travel is. Commerce is profit heavy and necessity slim. But all of it relies heavily on air traffic if personal flex their collective muscle a bit maybe that long overdue raise will happen. Cost are going up everywhere and this will add to that. We need more local markets and intrastate sufficiency. Maybe vegetables from Hawaii don’t need to be on tables in Maine? Or wine from Japan need not be purchased in France? Sustainability was lost in the 1990s maybe we can scale back to restore sanity?! And keep prices low

@SusanInFlorida I agree with you there no one can be denied pay for work done. That is illegal!
Workers (any) and especially salaried ones sign an agreement that includes being paid for hours work(ed).
Interesting that a “republican” administration chooses to use mafia tactics against government employees.
As stated if workers aren’t getting paid for the work they are doing they stop working. These are essential workers. The president DJT is delaying government function so the charges against him never get processed. Running out the clock until he simply dies.
Will the necessary workers to execute the court orders against him be willing to break ranks for long enough to hold Mr. Trump accountable?
Idk! Hopefully?
THEN THEY WOULD GET PAID!

@exchrist i dont think this is a problem with one specific political party.

democrats have sent lots of americans to their deaths (world war 2, korea, vietnam) and sent federal troops in as strikebreakers to factories.
exchrist · 36-40
@SusanInFlorida I’m not looking at the past I’m looking at the present and in terms of war it is more often republican dominated congresses (and presidents) that declare war

I worked for my state's government for several years. I signed a contract to work. I would show up to work whether there was a strike or not. I’d work until my direct supervisor dismissed me or an actual union rep instructed me not to be at my desk. Even then I still showed up everyday or directly called my boss in order to guarantee I wasn’t supposed to be at my desk. I lived 20 miles from where I worked and took the bus.

why you always post comments abouit stuff that will or is causing problems? nothing wrong about it, but why such a deep concern about it? also it seems you put lots of thinking into your posts, are they really yours? they do seem well researched, anyhow i like reading your posts, you seem very well informed about stuff
SusanInFlorida · 31-35, F
@idontcareok there were 6 million novels published in america last year. 11,000 per day. it's an exercise in futility unless your name is Stephen King or JK. Rowling.
Podcasts are headed the same way. @idontcareok @SusanInFlorida

@SusanInFlorida wow, that's a lot, well i wish you the very best, may i please read a few sentences?? i know you will do okay, because I want you to, good luck my dear

Last time they went on strike and most were fired permanently. Sick outs are safer.

5.60 per flight direction
40000 flights 100 passengers average
4000000 x 5.60 = 22400000 per day

8.2 billion a year

Average screening employee makes 15 an hr

This amount would cover 272,000 employees.
SusanInFlorida · 31-35, F
@dale74 here are the official government statistics (link at bottom):

1 - $180 billion in fares. $7 billion in baggage fees

2 - the airlines made $4 billion (after tax) in 2023 (latest year of avialable data). in 2020 (covid) they lost $28 billion due to government mandated shutdowns which curtailed air travel.

Americans are the worst at remembering history.

This happened under one of the government shutdowns during the first Trump admin and it did force them to cut a deal and get the government open again.
SumKindaMunster · 51-55, M
@exchrist Trump DERANGEMENT Syndrome, not denial.

I'm not ignoring Trump, nor suggesting you do either.

Rather, I am not interested in hearing yet another screed about what Trump should do or say from people who hate him and want him dead.

What is there to discuss? Your hatred?

Pass.
exchrist · 36-40
@SumKindaMunster I agree but I get it out eventually then drop it. How’s the munsters doing?
exchrist · 36-40
@SumKindaMunster again you ignore hard truth Trump is deranged he suffers the syndrome he is president he is the problem maybe more so congress but it seem djt is holding congress hostage. What do you propose to fix this? U just sidestep project blame and repeat nothing new proposed what am I supposed to respond with? What would you do?
dale74 · M
Here's a better question. How come, we pay x amount every time we take a flight for tsa wouldn't it make sense if that money went to pay tsa
SusanInFlorida · 31-35, F
@dale74 airlines and airports started getting TSA surcharges the moment is went into business. Adding a traveller level fee would be double taxation.
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
But in the US the people who matter have private planes, so nothing much will get done.
SusanInFlorida · 31-35, F
@ChipmunkErnie private planes can (sometimes) legally depart from private airfields when no one is in the control tower.

but then where are they gonna go? they can't land at a major commercial airport that had an air traffic control walk out?
Sadly the 0-2 Phillies made it to LA LA Land.
With any luck the air traffic controllers sick out may keep them there. @GerOttman

@jackjjackson i have discovered - through extensive statistical analysis - that my financial and personal well-being are not associated in any way with the World Series or Super Bowl winners.

My friends think I'm crazy.

But I do buy a lottery ticket whenever the payoff is $1 billion or more. For 2 bucks it's an affordable dream.
Crazywaterspring · 61-69, M
@SusanInFlorida No matter which team wins or loses we still have to go to work and pay bills. Sports are an unproductive waste.
