Jimmy Kimmel

This is so incredible, how can anyone still say that the trump administration is protecting the freedom of speech? one of the most popular late night hosts in the usa is getting thrown of the air because he said something the government didnt like. He didnt say anything illegal. Of course there are some things that should be censored, but how did jimmy kimmel deserve this, he hasnt done anything illegal.

"Jimmy Kimmel is off the air—indefinitely. ABC announced Wednesday evening that it would cease airing new episodes of Jimmy Kimmel Live! until further notice. The network, and its parent company Disney, acted after complaints from conservative viewers and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) accused the late-night host of inaccurate reporting regarding the assassination of right-wing personality Charlie Kirk."

So...here is something you MIGHT not know:

"The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) was established in 1934 to regulate interstate and foreign communications, ensuring efficient and fair access to communication services across the United States.

Historical Context
The FCC was created as part of the Communications Act of 1934, which aimed to consolidate and update the regulatory framework for communications in the U.S. This act replaced the earlier Federal Radio Commission (FRC), which had been established to manage the growing complexities of radio communications. The rapid expansion of radio broadcasting in the 1920s highlighted the need for a more comprehensive regulatory body to oversee various forms of communication, including radio, telephone, and later television and internet services.
Wikipedia

Purpose and Responsibilities
The primary purpose of the FCC is to regulate communications by radio, television, wire, satellite, and cable. Its establishment was driven by several key objectives:
Promote Universal Access: The FCC was mandated to ensure that all Americans have access to reliable communication services without discrimination based on race, color, religion, national origin, or sex.

Manage Spectrum Use: The agency oversees the allocation and use of radio frequencies to prevent interference between different communication services.

Ensure Public Safety: The FCC plays a crucial role in promoting public safety through effective communication systems, especially in emergencies.

Foster Competition: The FCC is responsible for maintaining fair competition in the telecommunications industry, which includes regulating mergers and acquisitions among communication companies.

Evolution of the FCC
Since its establishment, the FCC's role has expanded significantly. Initially focused on radio and telephone communications, it has adapted to include regulation of television, satellite, and broadband services. The agency continues to evolve in response to technological advancements and changing communication needs, ensuring that it meets the demands of modern society.

In summary, the FCC was established to create a structured regulatory environment for communications in the U.S., ensuring that all citizens have access to essential communication services while promoting safety, competition, and innovation in the industry."

I heard the above summed up as follows: That the FCC is responsible for making sure the American people hear FAIR and balanced coverage of major issues by the major networks. Jimmy Kimmel was very, very far from being fair, OR balanced, and as such was a very poor representative of Disney and ABC.

And it was ABC who fired Kimmel.
@4meAndyou jimmy kimmel is a satirist , and he didnt say anything illegal.
4meAndyou · F
@Firewarrior While not illegal in the least, it was completely tasteless and so utterly insensitive that Bob Iger, CEO of Disney, listened to it and decided that Kimmel had crossed the line.

Funny thing about being the BOSS of your employer...you don't get to be tasteless and utterly insensitive after someone is murdered and piss off the BOSS of your employer.

He is not above consequences for his actions. Nexstar who owns the majority of the ABC affiliates in the US said they were going to preempt his show over the lies he spewed about Charlie Kirk’s assassination and another communication group that owns ABC affiliates did the same. He was asked to apologize and refused. Couple that with abysmal ratings and Disney said enough is enough.
@JesseInTX what lies?
SumKindaMunster · 51-55, M
@Firewarrior He promoted the falsehoods that Kirk's assassin was a MAGA Republican.
SumKindaMunster · 51-55, M
He's not one of the most popular late night hosts, his ratings have been declining for years.

The decision came from ABC executives after they received a lot of negative feedback from other affiliates.

He didn't do or say anything illegal.

However, he did continue to promote falsehoods and disinformation regarding the Charlie Kirk assassin. In addition, when he was asked to walk these comments back, he refused.

He's been promoting Democrat propaganda for years and this was a consequence of that. Live by the sword, die by the sword.

I have a Facebook friend who works at a local TV station that’s dominated by Republicans and Trump supporters. This friend justified Kimmel’s removal by claiming that Kimmel was lying when he insinuated that Kirk’s killer wasn’t a leftist, and by telling me that no one has the right to criticize how another person (Trump in this case) “grieves”. Therefore ABC was right to pull Kimmel for being indecent about Kirk’s death.

As if Trump actually grieves anyone. As if Trump isn’t a self-centered psychopath who doesn’t give a shit about anyone but himself.
Why does anyone watch networks that peddle pharmaceuticals that are denied by over half the population > who don't have insurance?

I cut the cord a decade ago.

Stop feeding the machine that is designed to control you. Have allegiance over your autonomy.

Kimmel will be fine.

It's not about "freedom of speech" it's about financial mergers ... don't get sucked in with scare tactics.
RosaMarie · 46-50, F
@splishsplash The mergers that just happened to go through days after Colbert and Kimmel were cut? Days after the chair of the FCC is on tape saying how they could do this the easy way or the hard way. Even my most conservative friends are willing to admit this was the government's doing while still celebrating it. At least be honest with yourself.

late-night network television is not flourishing and is in a significant state of decline. While the format still exists, the business model is facing severe pressure from streaming and social media. This has led to falling viewership, shrinking ad revenue, and even the cancellation of long-running programs
pdockal · 56-60, M
@Firewarrior

Your missing my point

Do you believe that you should be able to say anything without consequences ?
pdockal · 56-60, M
@Firewarrior

Then what's the problem ?
ABC/Disney canceled him
Late night will probably end soon anyway
That's what the liberals did to Imus. Rules for thee but not for me??

@RogueLodyte Just asking a simple question.

Did the liberals fire Imus?
spjennifer · 61-69, T
@RogueLodyte

The issue is "free speech", is it not?

C'mon, Don Imus' comment was blatantly racist and he well should have been taken off the air because of it, nothing to do with "Free Speech" there. Jimmy Kimmel criticising tRump for spending all of what, 5 seconds on his good buddy Kirk's assassination? also had nothing to do with "Free Speech", it was a critical comment by an entertainer, like many before him... Methinks you lack a clear understanding of the meaning and intent of the 1st Ammendment.
MasterLee · 56-60, M
Newsflash: trump didn't fire Kimmel. He celebrated the network doing the right thing.

The autopen misadministration ordered networks to deplatform speech critical to them.
dale74 · M
One of the most popular, his reignings were in the toilet.He had an average of one point one million viewers in a country of three hundred thirty million.

Think about this, not even three percent of california watched him
MethDozer · M
@dale74 they pulled him because the head of the FCC threatened them and any affiliate if theh didn't. They were coerced to suspend him by threat.

Even Ted Cruz is alarmed by this ffs
dale74 · M
@MethDozer why don't you go read the FCC statement, because it doesn't actually say that it says burning misinformation can cause you to lose a license, especially when you know it is misinformation.When you repeat it.

But then again, you've had no problem.When conservatives are removed from the air, I don't think you ever protested roseanne barr or tim allen.
MethDozer · M
@dale74 were they targeted by a government agency? Apples to oranges.

And yes, yes I would have called foul if they were targeted by a government agency vs. just public reaction.
Confined · 56-60, M
Kimmel was loosing the network 15 million per year. He was going off the air anyway, they just decided to do it sooner then later.
Confined · 56-60, M
@Firewarrior His contract is done early next year. He was loosing them money. They used this as an excuse to take him off the sir.
pdockal · 56-60, M
@Firewarrior

Who cares ?
RedBaron · M
@Confined He was LOSING the network…

Do you know the difference between LOSE and LOOSE?
Jake966 · 56-60, M
The network canceled him not Trump
Jake966 · 56-60, M
@MethDozer from the FCC ?
MethDozer · M
@Jake966 Yes, his supension came after Trump's head of the FCC threatened ABC and any affiliate that didn't pull him. That puts a whole different sauce on that chicken wing.
Jake966 · 56-60, M
@MethDozer I’ll have to check that out
That’s a crazy story. Here one of our journos was fired for criticising Palestine…. So yeah. It’s crazy…..maybe he’ll make more money on you tube now.
JSul3 · 70-79
Charlie Kirk:
“Hate speech does not exist legally in America,” Kirk wrote on social media last year. “There’s ugly speech. There’s gross speech. There’s evil speech. And ALL of it is protected by the First Amendment. Keep America free.”
dale74 · M
The only stations this affected are broadcast stations that are on the air not any cable stations
Tastyfrzz · 61-69, M
Boycott Disney.
spjennifer · 61-69, T
Just like the Nazis did in the 1930's, take control of the media and influence the Population with your messaging, how long before they have the Army goosestepping in the streets?
Nanoose · 70-79, M
@Lilymoon I heard Trump has to wear suspenders with his diapers because they are so full of BS.
