Hmm, so right-wing parties in the UK are suddenly in favour of Proportional Representation

https://www.independent.co.uk/voices/proportional-representation-pr-fptp-electoral-reform-b2775772.html

Sounds good in theory, because the current First-Past-The-Post system works to shut out smaller parties and the UK electorate is extremely diverse politically. The extreme-right Reform, for example picked up millions of votes nationwide (mainly because of the Tory collapse) and only got 5 MPs. Under PR they would have got 100. It doesn't work for them. So of course, they, and other parties, are in favour of changing the voting system while in opposition.

I'd like to believe them. However, should they break through and gain power in 2029, I daresay they'll change their tune soon enough and decide FTTP is the "fairest" system we have.

I hope I'm wrong.

FPTP encourages the creation of broad umbrella parties that do best when they appeal to the centre and eschew identity politics. So it does not suit the Faragists or the current dysfunctional Conservative Party.

There was a national referendum on adopting proportional representation in 2011. The Conservative Party, one half of the governing coalition, campaigned against it.

Farage spouts a lot of hot air.
But of course, in opposition you can do that because you can always say you don't have the power to do anything.

Might be worth asking him if he realises the same problems will arise should an anti Reform party rise to the fore.
Everyone is trying to be inclusive. But I prefer the company of the exclusive.

@jackjjackson In the UK, the right had fucked things up so completely since 2010 that no party, no matter how left-wing, can fix things in one term.

Trouble is, people want solutions now. It ain’t happening, and an extreme right party is just waiting to make things infinitely worse.

Unless people come to their senses before 2029.
