I don't know enough about Virginia state politics to know if that's a bad campaign or not, but just hearing a Democrat talk about an actual policy instead of vague statements about "opportunity" or making their entire campaign about not being the other guy sounds like an improvement to me (how low the bar is at this point). I doubt everyone in Virginia is anti-education; it's just the way that's framed by the Republican party can be appealing, especially if it's in an inflammatory "they're indoctrinating your kids" way. It's definitely possible to make a campaign on education about caring for kids and families and communities, and the exact opposite of what someone like Youngkin would do.

I hope she has more than just that one talking point, though.

@HiFiRaver Oh no, she is doing that too. Lol but a larger portion of her ads are policy based

This is a fair point, but consider this:

A few years ago, nobody cared about trans people. Immigration was an issue, but people generally thought about it in a nuanced way. But the right-wing establishment changed that by constantly lying and fear-mongering about immigrants and the transes. A few years later, the overall population is a lot more transphobic and racist.
The moral is that people don't have fixed views. The same way the Right changes the public's views for the worse, we can change those views for the better. Voters in VA are anti-education? Well, it's on Democrats to change that. If Zohran Mamdani can do it in NYC, so can Democrats in other cities and states.

@BohoBabe Believe me! I am hopeful!

@FoxyQueen Hope HARDER!!

Nah, Youngkin won by scaring voters that maybe Democrats wanted to teach kids that white people are bad (Critical Race Theory). And I seem to recall reading that the problem wasn’t that voters believed what Youngkin was saying was true, it was that they weren’t sure that it wasn’t true. It’s not the policies themselves, it’s the framing of those policies. More teachers and better pay is a good and reasonable goal for Virginia Democrats, and they can achieve it with the right framing. From what I’ve seen of them in the recent past I have also thought that the Virginia Democratic Party seemed a bit feckless, but I don’t see anything wrong with what they seem to be doing this time.

So many times I see politicians wanting to stay on the message of the party or the group, but not knowing they could make better strategic decisions. There’s a way to somewhat do both.
FoxyQueen · 51-55, F
@BillyMack VA is weird in that the top half of the state is blue, but the rest is all red. I have to assume by appealing to the democrats in the top half of the state, she thinks she'll win. Just seems pike one would want to find topics the rest of the state can support as well.
BillyMack · 46-50, M
@FoxyQueen yeah I get that. We’re all red here so most politicians know what to focus on.
Northwest · M
I think democrats should stay true to the main message: education is important.
FoxyQueen · 51-55, F
@Northwest It is. Absolutely. If education isn't the primary focus then we are simply having kids for future labor and/or military and that is not fair to the children. They will have never had an opportunity to be more.
Sayana · 22-25, F
why you discuss your countries political parties' problem in a World -Social forum ??

Who cares what American parties do or think ? 🤷‍♀
Northwest · M
@Sayana
1. Germans, 2. Indians. 3 Koreans, 3. Chinse. 4. British etc, are filled in all in NASA and all top companies in USA.🤷‍♀

Amazing. It's like it suddenly dawned on you that the USA is a land of immigrants. It's not like we dd not manage to nearly exterminate Native Americans.

But common Americans still thinks that " America is great as they eat 12 pizza a day and keep getting fatter and fatter....🤷‍♀

However, you still fail to grasp that "common Americans", are those same Germans, Indians, Koreans, Chinese, etc, you already mentioned. You should start by learning something about America.
Sayana · 22-25, F
@Northwest No, I know it, America is what because of those hardworking and intelligent guys who went there around the world.

Common Americans have No special talent !

@Sayana
Common Americans have No special talent !

And once and for all, proving that you have no clue wha a common American is.

No, I know it,

Read the above, you have no clue.

America is what because of those hardworking and intelligent guys who went there around the world.

You still have no clue.

Excellent! 🙂🙂🙂
FoxyQueen · 51-55, F
@Musicman I already answered that as that it was an exaggerated reaction due to a useless moral panic about things people refuse to understand.
Fallflower · 46-50, F
@FoxyQueen God I couldn’t agree with you more enthusiastically about all this.
