It was simple a theft of a name to discredit good men like like our 16th. Old Southern Democrats were hated after the Civil War so to rebuild they changed their name to confuse people.
The republican party today a has nothing to do with Abraham Lincoln. All pro segregation pro-racism people are Republican and their ancestors were Southern Democrats. There is nothing grand old or honest about the GOP except they are obsessed with old people having control of the country.

@MarthannBann888 What kind rock have you been living under until now? The modern Republican has always been pro segregation. The Republican Party was against the abolition of segregation and the civil rights movement. Black people around white people the Republican Party would have probably call that “ the beginning of Hell on earth”
