Trump Admin Ends DACA Healthcare Coverage, Projects $12B in ObamaCare Savings
With common sense reforms, Trump is showing that better healthcare doesn’t mean bigger government. His administration is targeting waste and putting American citizens first – a refreshing change after years of policies that did the opposite.
The Trump administration announced major changes to ObamaCare on Friday. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) finalized a rule that will save taxpayers billions while ending healthcare coverage for illegal immigrants under the DACA program.
The new policy is expected to reduce individual health insurance premiums by 5% on average. Even better, taxpayers will save up to $12 billion in 2026 alone. That’s real money staying in Americans’ pockets instead of funding a bloated system.
CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz explained the changes: “CMS is restoring integrity to ACA Exchanges by cracking down on fraud, protecting American taxpayer dollars, and ensuring coverage is there for those who truly need it. This is about putting patients first, stopping exploitation of the system, and realigning the program with the values of personal responsibility and fiscal discipline.”
Dr. Oz also revealed that an estimated 4 million people may have been improperly enrolled in 2024. Many didn’t even know they were signed up or that their plans had changed.
The new rule reinstates the longstanding 2012 interpretation that excludes DACA recipients from ACA Exchange coverage. This reverses the Biden administration’s efforts to provide taxpayer-funded health insurance to illegal aliens.
Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. supported the changes. “We are strengthening health insurance markets for American families and protecting taxpayer dollars from waste, fraud, and abuse,” he stated. “With this rule, we’re lowering marketplace premiums, expanding coverage for families, and ensuring that illegal aliens do not receive taxpayer-funded health insurance.”
The policy change follows a December ruling from U.S. District Judge Daniel M. Traynor. He granted a stay for 19 states challenging Biden’s rule that would have allowed nearly 150,000 illegal immigrants to enroll for coverage.
