Bezos’ Venice wedding to cost $55 million. He could have staged it in America for a lot less.

The good citizens of Venice are protesting Jeff Bezos' second marriage. They’ve abandoned their gondolas and taken to the streets. They believe this will put an end to "inequality”. (see links below).

There’s probably a couple of things wrong with this.

First of all, if you live in Venice, and you think rent is too high and wages are too low, that’s something you should take up with the government. Italian PM Giorgi Meloni should be sympathetic – her net worth is less than $2 million. Venice has been in tough shape for years. In 2014 "the Floating City" threatened to secede entirely from Italy, due to corruption, high taxes, and economic mismanagement. Bezos should be seen as an angel for Venetians, unless they’ve gone blind. Not a demon.

There is a LOT of money fueling these anti-Bezos protests. Organizations like rent cap advocates. Universities. Venetians against cruise ships. There aren’t ocean liners in Venice at the moment, as far as I can determine, so the hate has pivoted to Bezos. He has at least 2 yachts, but no gondolas yet.

To be fair, I've also opposed Bezos’ Royal Italian Wedding farce, but for different reasons. Let’s return to the $55 million cost. Wouldn't that be better spent in America? I'm not interested in Making Venice Great Again. There are a lot of US cities worse off than Venice, and which would welcome the opportunity to host the biggest wedding since the Prince Charles and Lady Diana. That one cost $150 million, if you use inflation adjusted 2025 dollars. And there wasn’t even a giant yacht involved. Charles and Diana’s wedding was paid for in large part by UK taxpayers, not profits from some discount shopping club founded by royal ancestors named Tudors, Hapsburg, or Windsor.

Imagine what an extra $55 million could do for a struggling city like Gary, Indiana, or Baltimore. Baltimore in particular could have a budget deficit of $100 million next year. They’ve been beset by arson, riots, corrupt police, and a mayor who served time in the state penitentiary. The city deserves a break. Plus, Baltimore has a harbor big enough to allow Bezos' 400 foot yacht (the Koru) to drop anchor. Possibly alongside the USS Constellation (puny in comparison, at 200 feet long). When it was launched in 1854, the Constellation was America’s biggest - and last - sail powered US Navy Warship. The Koru's offensive and defensive armament is not known. It's possible drone interceptors may be on board.

Okay, yes . . . I agree that Bezos is out of touch with reality. Jeff thinks spending $55 million in Venice to stage the “Queen for a Day “ show for is girlfriend is going to be treated kindly by history. It won't be. Nobody cares, despite what you're hearing from People Magazine dot-com, and Venetians Against Cruise Ships dot-org.

I’m just sayin’ . . .

I think some Venetians simply object to their much loved city effectively being turned into a film set by the highest bidder, with the consequent inconvenience and disruption to their daily lives. There were nearly 6m tourist arrivals in Venice last year. Some people make fortunes, but the bodies entrusted with the city's heritage struggle to offset the damage caused to the urban environment.

I completely agree that the money would better recycled in the US, but he’s entitled to spend his money as he likes. It also started a boycott of Amazon here, but that’s not going to make a measurable dent.
SusanInFlorida · 31-35, F
@joe438 no question that he's both entitled and allowed by law.

i'm just pointing out that he's mostly brain dead if he doesn't understand that he will be mocked for this, for the rest of his life.
joe438 · 61-69, M
@SusanInFlorida It's July 2. The mocking is already over.
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
Better he spend the money and keep it in circulation than just invest it in bonds or whatever and collect the interest -- at least the wedding must have helped create/keep jobs and feed/support lots or workers and their families.
jehova · 31-35, M
@ChipmunkErnie it would be best had he spent the money in the u.s. economy rather than exporting those dollars to a foreign one. Indeed, above a certain set amount (lets say $1 million; as an example) all money over that threshold spent overseas should be taxed for domestic revenue. America is huge in debt. Support your native country's domestic economy or spend $55 million in a foreign economy?
Seems simple. If anything the U.S. shouldnt recognize his marriage at all; until he pays the equivalent in taxes to America that would have been collected by American taxes had the money beenbspent here. then it could be recognized. Given he spent that much in italy!
Consequences. Plus he has plenty of money.
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
@jehova So, tax the rich -- simple. Go back to the tax rates of the 1950s.
jehova · 31-35, M
@ChipmunkErnie yes thatd be adequate! instead war hawk politicains want any excuse to further America as a WW2 veteran and marvel comic personality "captain America".
jehova · 31-35, M
1) i wonder if weddings outside of the u.s. shouldnt count for citizenship requirements. 2) that money should be spent in America for the reasons youve noted (perhaps an event tax for foreign weddings to be recognized when conducted on foreign soil. Absent religious exemptions and\or expense caps. America needs that $55 million.
jehova · 31-35, M
@SusanInFlorida thats the crux of the issue. Id like to see a flat 30% income tax on everyone all capital gains all income. No exceptions.America has bills to pay!
SusanInFlorida · 31-35, F
@jehova so you don't want any deductions for spouses, children, charitable deductions, medical expenses?
jehova · 31-35, M
@SusanInFlorida flat tax with deductions? That seems reasonable. What America seems to do instead is exemptions and reduction in taxation (amount paid) only based on amount earned. And agedness. All of which translates to rebates.
We got bills to pay.
iamthe99 · M
If he can afford to essentially hire Venice, he can afford to pay more in tax.

I'm just sayin'...
jehova · 31-35, M
@iamthe99 absolutely! And i love that perspective. If this billionaire wants to spend money to get married foreignly. He should have a proportionate increase in tax rate relative to the amount spent foreignly on the wedding? He spends 55 million on the venice wedding. As a result he pays an additional 55 % in income tax for the first 5 years of his marriage? (maybe only if his partner is a foreign national) or if a foreign wedding to a foreign national maybe its a lifetime 55% increase(lifetime of the marriage)?. Consequences. . . We need consequence. America has bills to pay. If more income means lower taxes. It also means higher fees! For EVERYONE.
Not to mention Bezos can obviously afford to pay more.
SusanInFlorida · 31-35, F
@iamthe99 morally correct. but is he actuallly in violation of any tax laws?

America has the most complicated corporate income tax on earth. it's that way deliberately, because politician have been bribed to create loopholes for campaign donors. Whatever Amazon is up to, I doubt that it's any different than

- Facebook
- Google
- Tesla
- Apple
- Microsoft
- Berkshire Hathaway (warren buffet)
- Hollywood studios, etc
YoMomma ·
I didn't know he was getting married again and couldn't care less what he does or doesn't spend 😏 but people hate selfish people in general because they are envious ..
KingFeeder · 36-40, M
She wanted the wedding she wanted. Happy wife, happy life.
SusanInFlorida · 31-35, F
@KingFeeder if that were true, there would be no divorces. lavish weddings and rich husbands don't necessarily result in happy wives.

"We don't get to choose who we fall in love with" (Jaimie Lannister, Game of Thrones)
wildbill83 · 41-45, M
@KingFeeder uncle spend about 60k on cousins first wedding, marriage lasted about 5 months...
Oligarchs don't have a country. That's fine for people too poor for immigration rights. You have cages, as Hitler calls then. Oligarchs don't! You like cages for people, so it's okay with me!
SusanInFlorida · 31-35, F
@Roundandroundwego everybody wants to have america as their country, when ayatollahs, presidents for life, maximum leaders, and crown princes start arresting their friends and relatives
@SusanInFlorida thoughtful people are world citizens. We want peace and open borders. You got your fake nation to cite.
You have your cages and businesses are global! You need the discipline. Just cuz you're trapped don't make it a conversation camp.

I few years ago I bought a few unbelievably cheap items that were actually good and despite that because of the whole business model thing I blackballed them. @SusanInFlorida
SusanInFlorida · 31-35, F
@jackjjackson my Amazon cart currently contains:

- kitchen trash bags (the drawstring kind)
- cat food
- neem oil (to protect houseplants from insects)
- green tea
- blue agave sweetener

I schedule deliveries once a week. all these items are dramatically cheaper than if I bought them at the supermarket.
Amazon I do. I go the subscription route and if 5 things come on your delivery dat you get 15% off them all. Plus you can see what is scheduled 4-5 months our so you can reshuffle dates so you always get the 15% off. Or can cancel or push back stuff you have too munch of. I order six months worth of all sizes of bags on prime date when they are around a third off. Can’t beat it. Savings, flexibility, no going to stores, not paying for gas, etc. no Temu though. @SusanInFlorida
