Unfortunately, since Trump single-handedly dismantled the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action in 2018 and put nothing in its place, the scope for peaceful negotiation is now severely limited.
"Should he do nothing?"
Probably the least damaging option and he has had plenty of practice at that recently!

Is this not what diplomacy is for?

@emiliya Diplomats need a structure to work within. It's not as though the USA, UK, etc, have full embassies in Tehran.
emiliya · 22-25, F
@SunshineGirl You do not have to be a diplomat to engage in diplomacy. We can all do it. It has been around since we have been around.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@emiliya All of us can talk. Few can do it with sufficient authority to engage and persuade the other side.
emiliya · 22-25, F
@SunshineGirl I am surprised you speak of a lack of diplomatic structure when there were talks with Iran until Israel attacked. Did you not formerly work in the civil service? You should know these things.
There is wishful thinking on the part of leftists. They want Trump to fail and for this to be a monumental blunder. We should forget about our politics and encourage Trump to pursue the peaceful path and to persevere with diplomacy and compromise.

Good luck with this. In my experience reasoning with them and providing them with facts goes nowhere. @emiliya

tRump's best bet would be to put in place a trusted negotiator to make a new deal. And the best candidate for said trusted negotiator is Barack Obama. Obama has proven he can do what tRump has failed to do.
Barring that, maybe tRump has more thoughts and prayers to offer.

Is this not what diplomacy is for?
Yes, and tRump demonstrably SUCKS at diplomacy! They want Trump to fail and for this to be a monumental blunder.
tRump ALREADY failed, and ALREADY committed his monumental blunder. tRump's failure and blunder was terminating and not replacing Obama's JCPOA. The current situation is that blunder - with concomitant worldwide distrust of tRump - playing out.tRump's best bet would be to put in place a trusted negotiator to make a new deal. @emiliya I worked for HM Treasury, not the Foreign Service. I am not leftist. I don't want any friendly nation to "fail". I was simply pointing out that Trump burnt diplomatic bridges in 2018, against the advice of allies, which is making the current crisis more difficult to resolve.

@SunshineGirl you're delusional, this was the plan that would allow them to achieve a nuclear. Weapon over the course of ten years.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@dale74 Yes, and Trump withdrew from a multi-national effort to incentivise Iran not to escalate, principally on the grounds that the JCPA was the idea of his political opponent . .
dale74 · M
@SunshineGirl well unfortunately, I disagree with the whole premise that Iran would keep up, they're side of the agreement.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@dale74 It happened seven years ago. It is a hypothetical today. But more importantly it explains why diplomatic channels are blocked.
ElwoodBlues · M
@emiliya @SunshineGirl dale 74 who blocks me won't see this, but this distinguished scientist was our guy in charge of making sure the JCPOA was verifiable and measuring levels of adherence.
Dr Ernest J. Moniz, former MIT nuclear physics professor, Belfer Center senior fellow; CEO of the Nuclear Threat Initiative; former U.S. secretary of Energy, and lead technical negotiator of the Iran nuclear deal, released this statement soon after tRump blew up the JCPOA.
President Trump’s decision today to withdraw from the Iranian nuclear deal is a major strategic mistake that not only damages the United States’ ability to prevent Iran from acquiring the material for a nuclear weapon, but also impairs our ability to prevent the spread and use of nuclear weapons, to work with allies and partners on issues of global concern, and to protect our interests in the Middle East for years, if not decades, to come. The Iran nuclear deal rolled back Iran’s nuclear program and imposed uniquely stringent monitoring and verification measures — the most important elements of which were permanent — to prevent the country from ever developing a bomb. The United States is now in violation of the terms of the deal without offering a credible alternative. The Iran deal is and has always been about depriving Iran of the nuclear materials — highly enriched uranium and plutonium — needed to make a weapon. As international inspectors, who have been on the ground every day since the deal was concluded, have confirmed: The Iran agreement has accomplished this. The fact that the advice of this nation’s most-important allies was ignored in this decision adds to the consequence of the president’s decision. Remaining in the agreement was very clearly in the U.S. national interest. It’s hard to predict what will unfold from here, but the president has driven a deep wedge between the United States and our allies in Europe and has withdrawn from the process that would allow a comprehensive investigation of the Iran archives recently revealed by Israel.
jackjjackson · M
That agreement was not designed to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons only delaying it. The agreement was never enforced. A load of nothing burgers. @ElwoodBlues
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@jackjjackson It was a negotiating tool. Iran was desperate for sanctions to be eased and there were relatively moderate ministers in the government who were open to talks with the West. Trump unilaterally decided it was a "bad deal" and withdrew without offering any alternative.
There was also no evidence in 2018 that Iran intended to develop nuclear weapons. In 2025 there is evidence that a diplomatically isolated Iran has breached the non-proliferation treaty.

@jackjjackson says
Moniz:
only delaying it.
A ten to 15 year expiration on the original terms. During which Iranian society could taste the benefits of life without sanctions. During which further agreements could be negotiated. It's a stepwise process. Or it was until tRump blew up the agreement and replaced it with NOTHING.The agreement was never enforced.
Dr Moniz says it WAS enforced. The IAEA inspectors who were on the ground in Iraq say it WAS enforced. I find them more credible than tRump apologists like yourself.Moniz:

Kind of like the tRump admin telling us he would lower grocery prices on day one and end the wars in Gaza and Ukraine in 24 hours. You’ve been duped, @jackjjackson.
