No formal commitment was made to not move NATO east. Some claim there was a verbal commitment. Gorbachev has claimed there was a commitment in some interviews and denied it in others. So, tough luck Russia.

@MoveAlong yes, even the UN charter is abusable. Not a formal commitment for the USA!
And that's important to remember. Don't expect peace, they look only pause the aggression and they're taking everything away.

Ukraine gave Russia its nuclear weapons and Russia promised not to attack Ukraine in return, in a written memorandum, 30 years ago.

Ukraine is a free country, they can join any union they want.

If Russia wants to defend itself, they should do so on their own ground.

@helenS Yes , but in Russia their dna it says there are 400 years behind. Don't use western standards to understand them. Ukraine cant join any thing , they are 20 years behind .
