THAT is exactly right. My own mother was intensely bigoted against Mexican migrant workers. They arrived every summer at harvest to work on my grandfather's farm, and she would NOT allow me to play with their children. She told me they all had lice.

I grew up in rural upstate NY. Very white. My Mom told me a story of my first day of school and meeting a black kid, Jimmy, for the first time. She said I went over and started touching his hair because it was new. And then he touched mine. We because best buddies.
