Some kids go by a nickname that is not either their first name or middle name. Is this now illegal in florida? What if a boy wants to be called Tony instead of Antonio?

@trollslayer Tony or Toni?

@trollslayer Florida requires that parents file permission with the school to use names not assigned at birth for children.

@sunsporter1649 Is that the same Florida that has the GIANT teacher shortage, or some other Florida??

@ViciDraco i guess the idea is that if a kid wants to use a different name, he/she must ask his/her parents. While I don’t see the big deal with calling a kid whatever name, as a parent, I can follow the logic here. If my child wanted to use a different name, I would let him, but I would want to know.

@trollslayer I wouldn't. In a state that is actively trying to erase LGBTQ from even being mentioned in schools I would not want a physical list that would identify my child as a possible member.

@trollslayer Further, in abusive households - school can be a respite. Having to get permission from a bigoted parent for a teacher to refer to you with a nickname erases that chance at respite.

@ViciDraco that’s basically my point. I would have no problem with it, and if there was a problem with it that is a huge red flag for an abusive household. If my child did not want to tell me, i would feel like a failure as a parent.
