Hegseth, contradicting White House, disputes he texted war plans

Axios/Politico reports:

“The Defense secretary attacked the journalist who was mistakenly added to a Signal chat with national security officials, but did not dispute its existence.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth denied he mishandled classified information and insisted “nobody was texting war plans,” a direct contradiction to the White House's response to a Signal chat between top Trump administration officials made public Monday by a journalist who was mistakenly added to the discussion.

Hegseth sought to discredit Jeffrey Goldberg, The Atlantic’s editor-in-chief, after his explosive story detailed how he was added to texts in a commercial app where Hegseth laid out the targets of airstrikes on Yemen-based Houthi fighters.

“You’re talking about a deceitful and highly discredited so-called journalist who's made a profession of peddling hoaxes,” an uncharacteristically angry Hegseth said about Goldberg, a well-regarded Washington reporter and editor.

“This is a guy who peddles in garbage.”

The secretary — who spoke as he landed in Hawaii on the start of a weeklong trip to Asia — didn’t deny the existence of the chat, which could have violated a federal law that deals with the handling of sensitive information. The group discussing the top-secret strikes included Vice President JD Vance, national security adviser Mike Waltz, and CIA Director John Ratcliffe.

National Security Council spokesperson Brian Hughes appeared to contradict Hegseth’s comments on Monday night by confirming the existence of the group and offering no denials as to its content.

“At this time, the message thread that was reported appears to be authentic, and we are reviewing how an inadvertent number was added to the chain,” he said.

The chat, set up by Waltz in the days prior to this month’s bombing campaign against the Iran-backed group, laid out the Trump administration’s thinking on whether to bomb the Houthis, who have targeted commercial ships in the Red Sea.

The information Hegseth shared with the group likely included classified information, raising the stakes of the situation. White House officials were questioning Waltz’s future role in the administration on Monday night, according to a POLITICO report.

Defense officials were aghast at the revelations and Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell did not respond to requests for comment.

Senator Jack Reed of Rhode Island, the ranking Democrat on the Armed Services Committee, said the “story represents one of the most egregious failures of operational security and common sense I have ever seen.””

My Commentary:

Goldberg gave a very detailed report of exactly what Hegseth uploaded.

So who are you going to believe? The editor who was inadvertently drawn into this unbelievable national security breach or the drunkard rapist that Trump nominated and all the Republican senators approved?

And why the HELL is Hegseth flying to Hawaii on the taxpayers dollar instead of appearing behind closed doors at an interrogation by the Senate Intel Committee???

They had a duty to not be having that discussion on Signal in the first place. If proper protocols had been followed, it never would have happened. But this administration is conducting its business in a way intended to avoid having to produce any records of what they're doing. They're violating the law and basic national security measures, and every single one of them should lose their jobs and face charges. But they won't. These are the actions of people who know they will never be held accountable for anything.
@Vin53 ABSOLUTELY CORRECT ON ALL PARTS!

@Vin53 trump's people aren't the brightest or even qualified. It will be a long time...

I love how Pete attacked the journalist for something that the journalist was accidentally added to as if it's their fault that white house officals wanted to text national security on an unprotected texting app.
@SatanBurger Did you listen to the Senate committee hearing? They literally tried to blame this on the Biden administration and Gabbard always avoided giving direct answers to simple questions saying that the incident was being investigated. She wouldn’t even admit to taking part in the call.

All of those knew better than that because everyone had to read a 14 page document and sign stating how government information is protected and processed.
The back story is because of trump’s and biden missed handling of documents found in their residence’s. Everybody had/has do it without exception.
Now technically speaking one of if not all should’ve been replaced and fired on spot for violating protocol.
Senator Duckworth brings up an interesting point. Hegseth moved CLASSIFIED INFORMATION onto an UNCLASSIFIED SYSTEM to transmit those war plans.

ALL OF THEIR PERSONAL DEVICES THAT WERE ON THAT CALL OR ANY OTHERS MUST BE IMMEDIATELY IMPOUNDED AND TURNED OVER TO THE FBI FORENSIC EXPERTS!

God only knows just how many security violations have already occurred in this misadministration and how many lives have been put at risk!

Did Goldberg have a duty to say "Hey, Everybody, I'm the editor of The Atlantic Monthly. I'll try to keep my comments to a minimum. Thanks for looping me into this chain!"
@Vin53 Not at all. He actually thought that they were trying to entrap him as tRUMP has personally attacked him on several occasions.

If any civil servant had made a similar illegal data breach, they would already have been suspended from duty and be awaiting criminsl charges.
@SunshineGirl If an active duty military officer had been involved they would immediately have had their security clearance canceled, been arrested, and faced court martial.

@KunsanVeteran Or any enlisted.
FYI: Both the White House and the National Security Council have confirmed that PETE HEGSETH DELIBERATELY LIED IN SAYING HE DID NOT PASS WAR PLANS

@KunsanVeteran Pete Hesgeth is an almost direct mirror of the Charlie Hesketh character in the Kingsman movie.
