You're a reasonable person approaching an area of public debate with a common opinion that feels like common sense. That debate is a red herring. Trans people in sports really doesn't matter, we're talking a very very very small number of people. But when its in the newspapers and the government makes a huge deal of it, suddenly reasonable people get put on an anti-trans side of a debate.

That makes the real shit more palatable. Barring medical care. Passports. Right to public life. The guy who responded to me saying they should be "get help" for their disorder, like it'd be rational for the government to force a million people into some kind of government mandated "help".
