Well, if the government does not pay taxes why in the hell was my military (Army) pay taxed for 27 years?
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@WillaKissing Because you arent the government. You worked for the government. (And thank you for your service) The government was your boss and you paid taxes to them for your job. (A touch of irony there)😷
WillaKissing · 56-60, M
@whowasthatmaskedman Yes, a touch of irony indeed, and thank you.
Reason10 · 70-79, M
@WillaKissing Government doesn't pay taxes. INDIVIDUALS who get a paycheck pay taxes. For soldiers who are paid by government, their paying taxes means they mostly work for free.

@Reason10 Federal government agencies pay employment taxes, purchase taxes, asset and transaction taxes, property taxes . . what more tax do you expect them to pay?

A private serving in the armed forces receives basic pay of around $24K and a total compensation package of around $47K when housing allowances and hazard pay are taken into account. After deducting state tax, federal income tax, Medicare and social security contributions, she is left with a net income of around $37.5K. How does this amount to "working for free"?
Reason10 · 70-79, M
@SunshineGirl Can you produce a link to back up that claim. Does FEMA file a tax return? Can you produce an IRS link showing its tax returns for the last couple of years.

BOYS AND GIRLS, WE'RE TALKING INCOME TAXES HERE. Tax cuts go to individuals who pay INCOME TAXES.

@Reason10 Reminds me of a bit from a song in some old show about the army:

The pay they give is
isn't very fine
We make $100 a week
and they take back $99
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@Reason10 No, you said "governments don't pay taxes", which is clearly incorrect. If you meant income taxes, why did you not say so?

Do you know of any corporation that pays income tax? Of course not, because income tax is levied only on individuals.
SparkleLeaf · 51-55, T
@SunshineGirl Corporate income tax is absolutely a thing. The main issue with it is that many of the most profitable corporations use creative accounting and in fact do not pay corporate income tax. Courtesy of https://www.taxnotes.com/opinions/which-corporations-pay-most-federal-income-tax/2023/11/02/7hj31 here is a partial chart of the companies that paid the most over three years. The numbers are an average for the three years, not the grand total.

SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@SparkleLeaf Well that is why we normally refer to it as corporation tax, which is generally (and inexplicably) levied at a much lower marginal rate than that paid by individuals on their personal income.

There is not much point in a government department paying corporation tax on its regular income as this is derived from tax in the first place and can in no way be described as profit. They do however pay property taxes, sales and transaction taxes, and employment taxes, just like everyone else.
