The Administration authorized $12 billion to aid farmers affected by unfair retaliatory tariffs.

Why are tariffs "fair" when Trump proposes them, but "unfair" when done by any other country?

Trump considers any country which has a trade surplus with the USA to be engaging in unfair trade practices, which is bizarre economic thinking.

That $12bn is the direct economic cost to taxpayers of Trump ripping up free trade agreements and having to compensate those whose livelihoods are damaged as a consequence.

@SunshineGirl You dingbat 🤦🏻‍♂ Other countries have been applying tariffs on the US goods for as long as we have existed. The US started using tariffs in 1789 but doesn't do a very good job at keeping things fair. Trump is looking to equalize the tariff imbalance. Example, if a country applies a tariff on US goods to protect their businesses from imports, that same tariff should apply the other way around. You tariff us for product A, we apply the same tariff on you for that product line.

Trade imbalances are import. If you can import to me for little to no tariff, but I can't export to you also for little or no tariff, that creates an imbalance. Unfair competition or as you've outlined "unfair retaliatory tariffs".

Tariffs can also be used to have a country correct what we might see as a problem in their behaviors. Watch what Canada and Mexico do with immigration. We're the most powerful economic engine on the planet. It's about damned time we start using our leverage to make America...well you know right?

@carpediem Protesting against the use of tariffs (which is clearly not what Trump is doing as he seems to think they are an acceptable substitute for income tax) by imposing further tariffs, makes zero sense.

Trade imbalances also occur when a country with a surfeit of goods or commodities trades with another country which is lacking in the same. It does not imply dishonesty on the part of the exporter.

Using impositions or taxes to influence behaviour is poor economics that interferes with peoples' livelihoods - hence why the taxpayer has to compensate farmers - and can have far-reaching unintended consequences.

@SunshineGirl Know what's impacting people's lives? Open borders will illegals pouring through. Wake up kid. Now they are going to be managed. Tariffs is one tool to help do that. There is no way Mexico and Canada will keep things they are. They'll go broke. Trump's tariffs on China never raised prices. China manipulated it's currency to offset the tariff. They've been doing that to dominate market segments. It's an unfair trade practice. Trump collected a crap load of $$ and was able to offset losses to farmers who were dealing with unfair practices on agriculture from other countries, like Canada.
