Newsom to ‘Trump-Proof’ California at Special Session
California Governor Gavin Newsom is set to convene a special emergency session of the state legislature on Monday, proposing a hefty $25 million legal defense fund aimed at “Trump-proofing” the Golden State. This move comes in anticipation of potential policy clashes with President-elect Donald Trump’s incoming administration.
Newsom stated that California “is a tent pole of the country… protecting and investing in rights and freedoms for all people.”He emphasized the state’s willingness to work with the new administration but added a warning.
“But when there is overreach, when lives are threatened, when rights and freedoms are targeted, we will take action. And that is exactly what this special session is about – setting this state up for success, regardless of who is in the White House,” said Newsom, per Fox News.
Newsom originally called for the special emergency session after Trump won the election. In a social media post, Newsom said “California is ready to fight” against the incoming administration’s policies.
